W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: UOIT earns four-point weekend, head into the break at .500
The York University Lions women's hockey team played a hard fought home-ice game on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 1), dropping a tough 3-1 decision to the No. 6 nationally-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks.
The win keeps the Golden Hawks in first place in the OUA standings with a 14-1-2 record, while the Lions fall to 4-10-1 with the loss.
The first period saw mostly physical hockey from each team, as both the Lions and the Hawks traded penalties.
The Hawks picked up the period's only goal on 4-on-4 play at 10:24 of the frame when Devon Skeats (Whitby, Ont.) beat Lions' goalie Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) low in the corner on a play that looked as though Lee already had covered the puck, but saw no whistle. Jessie Hurrell (Palgrave, Ont.) earned an assist on the goal.
The Lions posted scoring chances of their own, most notably on a great individual effort by Katrina Tollis (Hamilton, Ont.), whose intricate stick deking allowed her to split the defence and break in on Hawks' goalie Erika Thunder (Buffalo Point, Man.), who just managed to get her pad on Tollis' low glove-side shot.
The Lions enjoyed stellar goaltending of their own, as Lee's quick pads denied what looked to be a sure goal on a 2-on-0 Hawks breakaway after catching the Lions on a bad change. Lee followed the puck and snapped her pad down to deny the Hawks low. Lee's fantastic play throughout the period, both at even strength and on the penalty kill, allowed the Lions to head into the second period trailing by just the one goal.
After failing to score on an early 5-on-3 power play for two full minutes, the Lions got on the board with a shorthanded marker at 8:25 by team scoring leader Lisa Stathopulos (Toronto). Stathopulos intercepted a Laurier pass and sprung herself on a clear breakaway from centre ice, fooled Thunder with a tricky stick deke and then beat her through the five-hole. The goal was unassisted.
Laurier pulled ahead later on a goal by Danielle Im (Toronto) that came after a huge check by Skeats on a York defender. The hit left Lee undefended against two deep Hawks, and Skeats made an easy centering pass that Im put behind Lee at 12:45.
The Hawks extended their lead late in the second with a goal from Caitlin Muirhead (Waterloo, Ont.), who found the puck in a scramble in front of the net and put it through Lee's five-hole at 17:55 of the period. Laura Brooker (Fergus, Ont.) and Candice Styles (Orangeville, Ont.) assisted on the goal that brought the Hawks into the third with a 3-1 lead.
The Lions special teams came to the forefront in the third, opening the period with four consecutive power plays. Despite strong offensive-zone control, the Lions weren't able to get the shooting lanes they were looking for and couldn't break inside the Laurier box defence. Despite its lackluster power play, the Lions' penalty kill was perfect, killing a 50-second 5-on-3 late in the frame, largely as result of the play of Stathopulos, team captain Chloe Milano (Maple, Ont.), and the ever-impressive Lee.
The Lions outshot the Golden Hawks 11-4 in the final period but neither team registered a goal, and the Hawks held on for the win.
Lee made 19 saves on 22 shots for her day's effort, while Thunder stopped 23 of the 24 shots she faced. York's power play went 0-for-10 against the penalty kill of the mighty Hawks, while Laurier's power play was 1-for-7.
The Lions will close the 2012 portion of their schedule on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 2) on Sunday afternoon. The puck drops at 2pm in Waterloo, Ont., where the Lions will do battle with the Warriors. Following the December break, their season resumes on Saturday, Jan. 12, with a home-ice matchup against the Queen's Gaels at Canlan Ice Sports at 2pm.

Special teams played a key role in the day's contest, with five goals between the two teams being scored with the man advantage.
Adalena Tridico and Candace Kourounis led the way offensively for Windsor with 3 assists and 2 goals respectively, while Courtenay Jacklin dominated the Gaels offense, scoring a hat trick, including two power play goals and the winning marker.

Guelph @ Toronto
The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to the No. 10 Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, December 1 at Varsity Arena.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 9-6-1 and remain sixth in the OUA, behind the Windsor Lancers.
Marlie McLaughlin (Ottawa) and second-year forward Courtney Tougas (Thunder Bay, Ont.) scored for the Blues. Markham, Ont., native Kelly O’Hanlon picked up a helper to increase her team-leading point total to 20 on the season. O’Hanlon came into the game ranked sixth in the province in points.
Second-year goaltender Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) was sharp in net, making 36 saves despite being credited with the loss.
Kesteris also shut down OUA-leading goal scorer and rookie Guelph forward Amanda Parkins with several big saves throughout the game.
Penalties proved costly for the Blues, as they gave up six powerplay opportunities, five of which came in the second period.
Kesteris stood tall, and killed off a 5-on-3 advantage for the Gryphons to start the second, but at 14:49, with another Blues player in the box, Jessica Pinkerton opened the scoring for the Gryphons with a cross-crease pass that bounced off Kesteris and into the back of the net.
Guelph would continue that momentum, grabbing two more goals before the midway point of the period. Tamara Bell and Emily Corbett registered the goals, with Corbett’s coming on a 5-on-3 powerplay. After Kesteris withstood a shooting gallery in the Blues end, the puck came to Corbett who took a slap shot that caught the top corner.
Toronto would not get on the board until five minutes into the final frame on McLaughlin’s goal. With the Blues on their first and only powerplay of the game, McLaughlin snuck in from the point and flipped a rebound shot overtop of Guelph netminder Brooke Siddall.
The goal went straight to U of T’s legs, and with still over half the period remaining, Tougas scored on a brilliant individual effort. Entering the Gryphons zone, the second-year forward faked a slapshot, waltzed around the defenceman, and picked the top corner to bring the Blues within one.
They continued to press the attack, but were unable to get the tying goal before Bell jammed home a rebound for her second of the night, and gave the Gryphons back the two-goal lead.
Christine Grant added a goal in the final minute to put the game on ice.
Bell finished the game with two goals and an assist, and Kaitlyn Mora picked up three assists in the Gryphon’s win.
The Blues return to action tomorrow (Dec. 2) when they travel to Oshawa to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Queen's @ Western
In a clash of two nationally ranked teams the Western Mustangs women’s hockey team came out on top, taking down the Queen’s Gaels 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Thompson Arena. Currently ranked in eighth in the latest CIS Top 10, the Mustangs are the only team to defeat the number four Gaels in regulation this season, previously defeating them in Kingston on November 3.
The win was Western’s fourth in a row, including their second straight win over the CIS sixth ranked Laurier Golden Hawks, and the team ends the first half of the 2012-13 schedule with a 12-3-1 record. The Mustangs sit in fourth place in the OUA, five points behind the league leading Golden Hawks, and four points behind the Gaels.
Katelyn Gosling led Western in scoring on Sunday, picking up two assists, while three different Mustangs found the back of the net. Kelly Campbell was outstanding between the pipes, earning eighth win of the season and stopping 36 of 38 shots.
Queen’s came out of the gate hard, outshooting the Mustangs 13-5 in the first period. Despite the disparity in shots as well as finding themselves in penalty trouble the Western defence held and Campbell and company kept the Gaels from getting on the score sheet, making for a 0-0 tie after the opening 20 minutes.
The offence picked up in the middle frame, with Jessica Ross taking advantage of a Queen’s penalty to score her third goal of the season, this one coming on the power play less than five minutes into the period.
The Gaels answered back quickly, as Kristin Smith scored just over 90 seconds later, tying things up at one goal a piece.
Later in the period Western again utilized a strong power play attack when Stacey Scott beat Queen’s netminder Karissa Savage to put the Mustangs in front 2-1, a lead they would take into the second intermission.
Western started out the third period on the defensive, killing off a penalty that occurred at the final whistle of the second period. Despite being down a skater, Kryshandra Green was undeterred, taking a puck hard to the Queen’s net and flipping it past Savage for the shorthanded goal.
The Gaels continued to push, with Danielle Girard bringing the team within one just past the six-minute mark of the period. Queen’s had an excellent chance to even the score on a near breakaway with four seconds left, but Campbell shut the door, preserving a 3-2 Western victory.
Western now gets for the holiday break as players begin to prepare for final projects and exams. The team returns to the ice in the New Year, heading to Waterloo for a tournament from January 3-6.
