W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Queen's, Laurier trying to seperate from the pack
The Ryerson Rams losing streak reached five games after dropping a 4-1 decision to the nationally ranked Queen's Gaels Friday night at Mattamy Home Ice.
The sixth-ranked Gaels (9-1-1) lived up to their billing as one of the CIS's premier teams, but the Rams (2-7-0) held their own and showed improvement from the teams' first meeting.
"Their game-play was much more consistent," associate coach Michelle Janus said. "They know that they stepped it up and played better, but they still aren't happy. They aren't satisfied."
Courtenay Jacklin scored two goals and Taryn Pilon had three assists for Queen's while Mel Dodd-Moher stopped 27 of 28 shots for the win. Jacklin and Pilon make up two of Queen's top three scorers, but the Rams were able to keep Morgan McHaffie, the league's leading scorer, off the score sheet.
The Rams did get off to a rocky start Friday, conceding two goals (to Chantal Morais and Shawna Griffin) on the first four shots. Despite being stuck in the early hole, the Rams kept their composure and did not let the game get out of hand, exiting the period down 2-0.
"Sometimes we tend to get down on ourselves after they score," Stephanie Chiste, the Rams lone goal-scorer said. "But we kept going in this game, we kept it up. We went hard."
Brianna Tremblay was able to shake off the early goals and respond with a 24-save performance. With both backup goalies out due to injury, it was unlikely that Tremblay would have gotten the night off even if the game turned into a rout.
"After that (Tremblay) buckled down and came up with a few really good saves and kept us in the game," Janus said. "We fed off that momentum much better than we did last week."
Jacklin put the Gaels up 3-0 1:55 into the second period, but after that the Rams controlled much of the play. They skated hard against the Gaels and forced them into taking eight penalties on the evening. However the Rams were unable to make them pay and did not convert on the eight power play opportunities.
By contrast, Ryerson ended the game with only four infractions.
Associate director of athletics Stephanie White was behind the bench for Friday's tilt, assisting Janus in the absence of head coach Lisa Haley. White was the coach of the women's club team from 2008-11.

November 10 - UOIT @ Waterloo
The Warriors found their third win of the season with a 2-1 overtime victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday afternoon as part of Waterloo's Think Pink game at the CIF arena.
Kelly MacLean (St. George) notched the game winner at the 3:45 minute mark of OT to secure the two points for Waterloo. The win was Waterloo's second over UOIT in which the game required extra time. The first came back on October 20 in a shootout.
The first period opened with the UOIT Ridgebacks taking it to the Warriors, but Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) was able to weather the early storm. Waterloo responded late in the first with chances of their own as MacLean peppered Jessica Larabie (Pickering) but could not solve the UOIT netminder.
Following a scoreless opening period, the Warriors got on the board first as athlete of the week Marissa Redmond (Ajax) fired home her sixth goal of the season. MacLean was given the lone assist on the games' first goal.
Both teams exchanged chances the remainder of the second and third period before UOIT found the equalizer with 3:38 remaining in the game. Jill Morillo (Whitby) tied the game with her sixth of the season to send the game to overtime.
Overtime opened with both teams getting several quality chances before MacLean put the game away with just over one minute remaining to improve Waterloo's record to 3-6-2. With the loss the Ridgebacks fell to the identical record.

Toronto @ Laurier
Rookie forward Emily Kekewich of Kingston, Ont., scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining, to lead the No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team (9-1-1) past the Toronto Varsity Blues (7-3-1) by a score of 3-2.
For Kekewich, who recorded her first career point on an assist in the second period, the goal is her first career tally in a Hawks uniform.
However, it was another slow start for the purple and gold who fell behind 1-0 in the first period on a goal from Toronto's Marlie McLaughlin of Ottawa. Laurier responded in the second period when defenceman Geneva Kliman of Toronto, scored her first career OUA goal since transferring from the NCAA.
The third period was once again another wild one for the Hawks. After Toronto took the lead just 44 seconds into the frame, Laurier tied it just five minutes later when Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., scored her fifth goal of the season.
That set the stage for Kekewich who put the Hawks in front with 2:52 remaining in the game. Brittany Crago of Stouffville, Ont., set up the goal with her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Hawks goalie Erika Thunder of Buffalo Point, Man., earned her seventh win of the season by making 20 saves. Torontos Krista Funke of Regina, stopped 24 shots in a losing effort.

Jenna Lanzarotta (Mississauga, ON) led the Gryphon women’s hockey team to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Mustangs on Saturday.
The win propels the Gryphons to 7-2-2, while the Mustangs drop to 7-2-1 in the OUA standings.
Lanzarotta tallied two goals this afternoon, including the game winner late in the third period, in today’s win. Kate Mora (Guelph, ON) and Christine Grant (Mississauga, ON) pitched in with one goal each, while Brooke Siddall (Windsor, ON) was in net, making 15 saves.
The Gryphons were first on the scoreboard when Kate Mora (Guelph, ON) and Tam Bell (Guelph, ON) combined while short handed, to lift the Gryphons to a 1-0 lead over their opponents. But, the Mustangs quickly fired back with a powerplay goal from Stacey Scott (London, ON) and Kryshanda Green (Caledon, ON) at 14:28, to even the score 1-1.
The Mustangs came on strong in the second period, and took the lead when Scott fed Green a pass that hit the cross bar, and then fell in the back of the Gryphon net at 8:03. The Gryphons immediately went on the attack and were rewarded when Lanzoratta, with help from Bell and Gina Murray (Lucknow, ON), nabbed her first goal of the game on a powerplay, at 12:54 to tie the game back up, 2-2.
A confident Gryphon team stormed onto the ice in the third period and wasted no time, taking the lead back once again. Grant scored at 2:09, assisted by Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, ON) to up the score to 3-2. Minutes later, Kendra Deller (London, ON) took the puck deep in the Gryphon zone, beating defenseman Victoria Formusa (Whitby, ON) and then eventually Siddall, to earn the equalizer for the Mustangs at 6:52.
The third period began to intensify, but the Gryphons controlled the play and dominated the attack. With less than five minutes left in the game, Lanzoratta notched her second goal, assisted by Bell and Emily Corbett (Toronto), and the eventual game winner. The Mustangs made an effort to send the game into overtime, by adding an extra attacker with one minute left, but they could not breach a strong Gryphon defensive effort.
In goal, Siddal collected 15 saves, while Kelly Campbell (St.Thomas, ON) collected 33 for the Mustangs. The Gryphons went 1/3 on the powerplay, while the Mustangs went 1/2.

November 11 - Windsor @ Guelph
The Gryphon women’s hockey team suffered a tough, 2-0 loss to the Lancers this afternoon (Nov. 11) at the Gryphon Centre.
The loss drops the Gryphons to 7-3-2 and advances the Lancers to 8-4-0 on the season.
A physical, fast-paced affair played out at the Gryphon Centre this afternoon, with both teams looking to lock up their second win of the weekend. The Lancers got the jump on the Gryphons, scoring early in the first period when Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, ON) carried a puck fed to her by Lindsay Hoogstraten (St.George, ON) past the Gryphon defense and into the net, to put the Lancers up 1-0 at 5:40.
A tight Lancer defense spoiled Guelph’s offensive attack, resulting in many lost scoring chances for the Gryphons in the second period. Despite the fact that the majority of the period was played out in the Lancer zone, the Gryphons struggled to execute and were plagued with misfired shots.
The Gryphons began to lose their legs in the third period, allowing the Lancers to take control of the game. At 10:52, Candice Chevalier (Essex, ON) caught Brooke Siddall (Windsor, ON) off guard and recorded an unassisted goal for the Lancers, to advance the score to 2-0. The Gryphons continued to battle hard for the rest of the period, but could not get past Windsor netminder, Karlyle Robinson (St.Catharines, ON) before the buzzer rang to end the game.
Siddall faced 19 shots this afternoon for the Gryphons, while Robinson faced 21. Guelph went 0/3 on the powerplay while their opponents went 0/5.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the second as both goalies posted a shutout in the middle 20 minutes.

Ryerson @ Laurier
The No. 5 ranked Wilfrid Laurier women's hockey team added to their winning streak on Sunday night as they picked up their fourth straight victory, a 6-2 decision over the Ryerson Rams.
The Hawks were led by Jessie Hurrell of Palgrave, Ont., who racked up two goals and an assist, including the game-winner, in Laurier's victory.
Despite controlling the play for much of the opening period and outshooting the Rams 25-5, the Hawks were unable to pull away from the Rams. Devon Skeats of Whitby, Ont., notched her eighth goal of the season while Laurier was on the power play early in the period. Skeats is currently ranked third in the OUA in goals scored. Laurier's lead did not last long, as Ryerson knotted the game up at 1-1 just eleven seconds after Skeats' goal.
The second period saw Ryerson's defence tighten up, allowing only nine shots on net; however, that was all the Hawks needed to pull ahead 2-1. Captain Fiona Lester of Peterborough, Ont., capitalized on a chance generated by Haley Baxter of Waterloo, Ont., and Brittany Crago of Stouffville, Ont.
Laurier held a 2-1 lead heading into the final period, but an early Ryerson goal by Emily Rose Galliani Pecchia of Toronto, leveled the score at two goals apiece. Under two minutes later, Hurrell struck for the first of her two goals, giving Laurier its third and final lead of the game. Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont., Brittany Crago, and Hurrell all padded the Laurier lead within five minutes of each other to give the Hawks a comfortable 6-2 edge that they would hold on to for the remainder of the game.
Hurrel, Crago, Baxter, and Lester had multiple points for the Hawks who now have a record of 10-1-1.
