W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Western falls to Laurier in battle of ranked teams
The Lancer women’s hockey team lost a heartbreaking 4-0 game to the No. 4 Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night at South Windsor Arena.
After playing two tough games against the Golden Hawks this season, Windsor was looking to avenge their two losses earlier in the season to Laurier, and came out of the gates flying firing 13 shots at Hawks goaltender Kayla Brown but could not beat the Hawks goalie in the opening 20 minutes.
The intensity of the game picked up in the second period, a period that featured a penalty shot opportunity for both Laurier and Windsor just minutes apart. However, both Brown and Windsor’s netminder Karlyle Robinson were up to the challenge to keep the game scoreless.
The Hawks would finally break the deadlock at the 15:37 mark of the second period when Caitlin Muirhead found the back of the net to put the purple and gold up 1-0. Her goal was followed quickly by tallies from Andrea Shapero and Paula Lagamba to give Laurier a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.
In the third period, the Lancers put forth a potent offensive attack, but the Hawks limited them to just five shots on net in the final frame. Laurier’s Jessie Hurrell would round out the scoring inside the final three minutes to give the Hawks the 4-0 win.
The Lancers are 10-8-2 on the season and maintain their spot in fifth place in the standings.

January 19 - Western @ Ryerson
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams dropped their 15th straight contest after a 3-1 defeat against the No. 9 Western Mustangs Saturday afternoon at Mattamy Home Ice.
The speed and effective passing of the Mustangs (14-4-1) opened up the Rams (2-15-1) who conceded three goals on breakaways and odd-man rushes in a span of 7:19.
"Games like this are difficult because we have so much potential, but don't show it Victoria Arci (Woodbridge, Ont.), the Rams lone scorer said. "We don't do the things we practice; we try individual plays, which don't work in hockey because it's a team game. It's frustrating."
Jessica Ross opened the scoring for Western on a 2-on-1 rush at 16:34 of the first period. Ross opted to shoot instead of dishing the puck and went upstairs on Dana Carson (London, Ont.).
Western showcased their passing in the second period as Cassidy Gosling (London, Ont.)sent Kendra Deller (London, Ont.) in alone on a clear breakaway with a beautiful pass from her own end. Deller made no mistake, converting on her one-on-one chance at 2:57.
Fifty-six seconds later, Western's Casey Rosen was hauled down on a shorthanded breakaway and issued a penalty shot. The Toronto native scored high glove side on Carson to extend the lead to 3-0.
A part from the seven-minute span, the Rams played a sound defensive game. They held a nationally ranked opponent to zero goals in the back half of the game and kept Western's best player, Stacey Scott, off of the score sheet.
"There were some encouraging things," head coach Lisa Haley said. "Western's a top 10 team and our players are right there. We are showing that we can compete with some of the better teams in our conference and it's a matter of being able to execute."
The Rams held the advantage in shots 39-26, but a majority of those were low percentage shots and were easily stopped by Kelly Campbell (St. Thomas, Ont.).
"I think a lot of our shots in the first period came from outside their blueline," Haley said. "It has a lot to do with scoring chances than shots on goal. The shot clock is generous to us, but I felt as the game went on we were a lot more dangerous."
Arci put the Rams on the board with a power play goal at 12:36 of the third period and Melissa Wronzberg had a good scoring chance on a power move through the slot shortly after.
Carson made her fourth consecutive start for the Rams, stopping 23 of 26 shots in the loss. She earned praise from her coach, but Haley said Carson may get the day off tomorrow to rest up for a long road to London and Windsor next weekend.

Toronto @ Queen's
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 19, 2013) The No. 5 Queen's Gaels women's hockey team (16-2-2) was in action Saturday evening at the Memorial Centre against the Toronto Varsity Blues (11-8-1) in their lone match of the weekend. The Gaels took an early lead but the Varsity Blues scored with 40 seconds left in the final frame to force overtime, which solved nothing. After a scoreless extra frame Toronto was able to upset Queen's scoring with their fifth shooter.
The Gaels were dominate right from the puck drop, commanding offensive possession of the puck throughout most of the first period with the Varsity Blues only mustering under a minute of offensive possession in the first. The Gaels found themselves on three power-plays in the first frame and were able to capitalize on one, with winger Chantal Morais (Guelph, Ont.) completing the mechanical tic-tac-toe pass from Shawn Griffin (Calgary) and captain Kristin Smith (Toronto). Queen's found themselves in another five-on-four opporunity late but was unable to capitalize with Toronto goalkeeper Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) denying some quality scoring opportunities—the Gaels outshot the Blues 13-5 in the first.
Opening the second with a series of consecutive power-plays, Queen's was unable to take advantage and found themselves in their own end through the opening minutes of the frame. Gaels goaltender Melanie Dodd-Moher (Ottawa) was key for the tricolour during these pressure opportunities turning away two key two-on-one opportunities from the Blues. Late in the second the Gaels were being pressured deep in their zone where Dodd-Moher again was able to keep the Blues score sheet clean, helping Queens maintain their lead heading into the final period. With under a minute left and on their eighth power-play of the game Queen's was able to beat Kesteris, however the Gaels were called for having a player in the crease and the goal was called off. Queen's still had a minute advantage going into the third; however the shots were even at 15 after two periods of play.
With a power-play advantage in the opening minute of the third period the Gaels were able to apply some pressure and momentum that they had lost during the second. This was short lived however, as Toronto was quickly able to regain their offensive pressure firing a series of scoring opportunities on Dodd-Moher throughout the final period. The Gaels fourth-year tender turned away all shots in her path, playing a pivotal role in her team's position in the game. Queen's found some offensive productivity late in the third while on the power-play, recording three credible scoring chances. Both teams exchanged scoring chances in the remaining minutes until Toronto was able to find the back of the net from a scramble in front of the net with 40 seconds on the clock and an empty goal. The goal from Blues forward Callie Bazak (Peterborough, Ont.) forced the game into overtime.
In overtime the Gaels found themselves on the man advantage early, however it was short lived with Queen's forward Brittany McHaffie recording her third penalty of the game, giving the Blues a minute advantage. Neither team was able to find any real offensive flow in the overtime period despite a few power-play opportunities—forcing a shoot-out decision.
In the shoot-out Toronto's fifth shooter Courtney Tougas (Thunderbay, Ont.) was able to beat Dodd-Moher and end the game in the Blues favour. Despite a valiant effort from the Gaels and Dodd-Moher, who stopped a total 17 of Toronto's 18 shots, the Gaels could not find an answer for Kesteris in the shoot-out.

Ryerson @ Toronto
Callie Bazak’s two goals powered the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Ryerson Rams in the sixth annual Think Pink game on Sunday, January 20 at Varsity Arena.
The win improves the Blues record to 12-8-1 on the season, and moves them within four points of Western for fourth-place in the OUA.
Bazak (Peterborough, Ont.) led the attack with two goals, and team captain Kelly O’Hanlon (Markham) put up three assists to bring her team-leading total to 23 points on the season. Toronto native Sonja Weidenfelder also scored, while defenceman Stacey Oue (Scarborough) grabbed the game-winner.
Sophomore goaltender Krista Funke (Regina) got the nod between the pipes, and made 26 saves for the win.
Despite being outshot in the opening frame, the Blues struck first on Weidenfelder’s tally. O’Hanlon corralled the puck at the side of the net, and dished it cross-crease to the second-year forward, who tapped it in. O’Hanlon then showcased her passing skills again late in the period, on a powerplay, firing a pass through the seam to Bazak who one-timed the puck past Ram’s goalie Emma Crawley to make it 2-0 in favour of the Blues.
Ryerson would fight back in the second period, scoring two goals just twenty-five seconds apart to tie the game. They then added a third unanswered goal on a deflection from Samantha Pui to grab a 3-2 lead.
But the Blues refused to quit, and at 4:27 of the second, Jacqueline Sheffel (Waubaushene, Ont.) intercepted a clearing attempt and fired a pass across the ice to Bazak who finished the play for her second goal of the game, to tie it at 3-3.
The Blues then earned themselves a powerplay opportunity early in the third, and Stacey Oue snuck in from the point and managed to control another great pass from O’Hanlon before roofing a backhand for the eventual game-winner.
Samantha Pui finished the game with three points (one goal, two assists) for Ryerson.
The Blues next game is Saturday January 26th in Windsor Ontario, against the Windsor Lancers. Game time is scheduled for 4:10 p.m.

Brock @ UOIT
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women’s hockey team did not have their best performance of the season on Sunday afternoon but still managed to leave the Campus Ice Centre with two points as they defeated the Brock Badgers by a score of 3-1.
With a 9-9-2 record, the Ridgebacks have matched a program high of 20 points in a season. Last year’s team set the UOIT record going 10-16-0 during the regular season.
UOIT goaltender Cassie Charette stood tall in net for the Ridgebacks allowing only one Badger goal on 20 shots. Brock fired eight shots on goal in the third period but Charette did an outstanding job of controlling her rebounds and preserving the Ridgeback lead.
Zoe Battie (Nanaimo, BC) got the Ridgebacks on the board seven minutes into the first period as she scored from the side of the net off a feed from Melissa Berney (Bowmanville, Ont.). Jenn Daly (Ajax, Ont.) got the second assist on the play.
Four minutes into the second period, Rachel Budden (Richmond, BC) scored her first career OUA goal to give the Ridgebacks a 2-0 lead. Laurier @ Western
LONDON, Ont. – Following their 3-1 victory over the Ryerson Rams in Toronto on Saturday afternoon the Western Mustangs returned home to host the rival Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday at Thompson Arena. Although Western came out on top in their first two regular season meetings this season the Golden Hawks were able to gain the upper hand Sunday, defeating the Mustangs 3-2.
With the loss the Mustangs move to 14-5-1 on the season and hold down fourth place in the OUA. Laurier now takes sole possession of first place with an 18-1-2 record.
The Golden Hawks outshot the Mustangs twelve to six in the first; however, Western goaltender Kelly Campbell would not allow any of the Laurier chances, turning away each of the Laurier shots in the opening 20 minutes. With a lot of pressure in the Mustang end, there were not a lot of opportunities for the Mustang shooters. The Golden Hawks offensive pressure in the first would set the standard for the rest of the game, as both teams knew it would be a close scoring contest.
The second period saw the game’s first goal with Western’s Kendra Deller flying in from the point cleaning up the puck in front of Laurier goaltender Kayla Brown. Stacey Scott would assist Deller’s goal with a tremendous wrap around effort after a pass from Katelyn Gosling, who would also pick up an assist.
Laurier wouldn’t let Western keep the lead, as they would answer two minutes later with a shot from Golden Hawk Robyn Degagne. The Mustangs would take a penalty late in the second and Laurier would take this power play opportunity and score their second goal of the game, this one coming off the stick of Fiona Lester. At the end of the second frame the Golden Hawks would take a 2-1 lead into intermission.
Laurier brought the pressure out fast once play resumed, scoring on Western only a minute into the third. Laurier shooter Devon Skeats put one past lengthening Laurier’s lead to two, but Western would answer quickly as Laurier took a penalty for interference. Assistant captain Tara Cation, would score single handedly with a wrist shot on the power play, giving Western a chance to tie things up and putting the score at 3-2.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs, Laurier would be able to contain Western for the remainder of the game and come away with the 3-2 win.
Campbell had another strong outing in the Western net, stopping 35 of 38 shots in the loss. At the other end of the rink Brown kept 22 of 24 pucks out of the Laurier goal to earn her eighth win of the season.
Next up for the Mustangs are a pair of home games at Thompson Arena next weekend. The Ryerson Rams come to town on Saturday while the Toronto Varsity Blues make the trek to London for a Sunday afternoon matchup. Puck drop for both games is set for 4:00 p.m.
