W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Queen's suffers first regulation loss of the year
The Windsor Lancers travelled to face off against the home team Western Mustangs today at a delayed 7:30pm game at Thompson Arena. The Mustangs faced a rough start, but overall the team came together and beat the Lancers 7-5.
Windsor came out of the gates storming to get the lead, as Western struggled to get the puck out of its own zone. As the shot total piled up, Windsor eventually saw success from Alyssa Baldin. Windsor took a 1-0 lead into the second period, outshooting the Mustangs 17-3.
“We came out of the gates slow today,” commented head coach Chris Higgins after the game. “We were a different team in the second.”
After the first intermission was over, the Mustangs came out to the ice with an intensity not seen in the first. Rookie Marlowe Pecora opened up the scoring for Western early in the second. Pecora uplifted the team's morale and also started a string of scoring for Western.
The Windsor Lancers fell shorthanded on a five on three power play for over 4 minutes, due to head checking penalties. Defenseman Katelyn Gosling scored her first goal of the season from the point with only 4 seconds remaining in the power play. The Mustangs would take the lead for the first time in the game, but the Lancers’ Polci took advantage of a break away and tie up the game at 2-2.
Western took the Lancers' tying goal as a challenge and answered in a hurry, with Mustang Carly Rolph finding the back of the net with assist from Madison Turk. Kendra Deller also beat the Lancer defense later in the frame with assists from the Gosling sisters -- assistant captain Katelyn and rookie Cassidy.
With a usual night's worth of goals underway, Windsor scored their third of the game on Mustang goalie Kelly Campbell. From there, Western's Kryshanda Green and Tara Cation responded with back-to-back goals. An exciting second period unfolded and the Mustangs prevailed with a 5-3 lead, but both teams knew that the game was far from over.
Western and Windsor met a stalemate of play in the opening of the third, as both teams fought for the puck. Western’s Natasha Panahi capitalized and put the game out of reach for the Lancers. The Lancers showed a last minute desperation goal with 58 seconds left in the game.
Western drove the puck into the Lancer’s end and scored with eight seconds remaining in the game -- a great closing touch with rookie Brianna Iazzolino’s first goal of the regular season and her varsity career. However the Lancer’s showed they were down and not out with a goal in the last second of the third game.
“Everyone in the line up is contributing; we are very happy with them,” commented Coach Higgins. “But we need to work on our defensive zone coverage for Sunday.”

Waterloo @ Brock
The Brock University women's hockey team (0-8-1 OUA) dropped a 2-1 decision to the Waterloo Warriors (2-5-2) Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
The Badgers seemed to have control early but gave up a power play goal to Waterloo forward Kelly MacLean (St. George, Ont.) to fall behind 1-0 just past the midway point in the first period. Sarah Endicott (Toronto, Ont.) and Marissa Redmond (Ajax, Ont.) would get the assists on the goal.
Later in the period, Maclean would get an assist on Marissa Redmond's (Ajax, Ont.) goal, putting Waterloo up 2-0 heading into the first intermission.
After an impressive 42 save performance the previous evening, Brock rookie goalie Claire Shaw (Rosemount, Ont.) was taken out of the game after the first period to give Emily Kelly (Port Elgin, Ont.) an opportunity to keep the Badgers in the game.
In the second period, the Badgers got one back to make the score 2-1. Brock's captain Maja Samborski (Toronto, Ont.) got her 3rd goal of the season and second on the power play. Leigh Vanderveen (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.) and Hailey Webb (Orillia, Ont.) got credit for the assists.
The Badgers outshot the Warriors in the third period 13 to 8 but they could not get the goal needed to send the game into overtime.
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia, Ont.) got the win in goal for Waterloo making 30 saves on the night. Brock's Kelly made 17 saves in the final two periods without surrendering a goal, while Shaw took the loss after allowing two goals in the first period.

November 3 - Waterloo @ Guelph
The Gryphon women’s hockey team earned at 3-2 victory over the Warriors this afternoon (Nov. 3) in front of a home crowd at the Gryphon Centre.
The win advances the Gryphons to 6-2-1 and drops the Warriors to 2-6-2 on the season.
Today’s game saw the berth of a budding rivalry between Guelph and Waterloo and as each team traded the lead, the physicality of the game increased.
Kate Mora (Guelph, ON) was a playmaker for the Gryphons this afternoon, notching two assists, while rookie forward Amanda Parkins (Kitchener, ON) earned another point to reaffirm why she sits among the top of the OUA standings as a leading point-getter.
Jenna Lanzoratta (Mississauga, ON) Tam Bell (Guelph, ON), and Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, ON) earned one goal apiece for the Gryphons and Marissa Redmond (Ajax, ON) and Sarah Wolfe (Waterloo, ON) scored one goal each for the Warriors.
Waterloo was first to score when Redmond, with help from Kelly MacLean (St.George, ON) and Lia Tennant (Kitchener, ON) wired off a shot that Brooke Siddall (Windsor, ON) was unable to control, to take an early lead at 9:39 in the first period. The Gryphons answered back minutes later, and were finally rewarded after several scoring chances, when Bell combined with Mora and Kim Wong (Mississauga, ON) to earn the equalizer, tying the game 1-1 at 12:02.
The Gryphons took the lead at 18:55 when Mora and Bell combined again with Lanzarotta on the powerplay to advance the scoreboard to 2-0 for the home team.
During the second period, the Gryphons allowed the Warriors to muscle their way back into the game. Wolfe (Waterloo, ON) notched a powerplay goal for the Warriors at 13:32 with help from Nicole Ballantyne (Toronto) and Kaitlyn McDonell (Kincardine, ON), to tie the game 2-2 going into the third period.
“I think we let them back in the game in the second period,” said Coach Rachel Flanagan. “We understood that, so we knew that one, we had to find a way to put the game away early and then we had to be defensively strong.”
The Gryphons scored the eventual game-winning goal early in the third period, just as planned. Pinkerton lit up the lamp after scoring on a rebound from Parkins, with help from Christine Grant (Mississauga, ON) to regain the lead, 3-2.
The Gryphons were able to hold off the Warrior assault for the reminder of the game, even after Waterloo added an extra attacker at 19:30, in a losing effort to even the score and force overtime.
Siddall earned the win for the Gryphons stopping 13 shots on net, while Allie Mitchell (Niagara Falls, ON) saved 20 of 23 shots on net.

York @ Ryerson
The Ryerson Rams dropped their third straight game, losing 3-0 to the York Lions Saturday afternoon at Mattamy Home Ice.
Despite putting 31 shots on net, Lions goaltender Megan Lee stymied the Rams (2-5-0), who were shut out for a second game in a row and haven’t scored on their last 47 shots.
“I thought we were the better team out there,” captain Nella Brodett said. “It’s just unfortunate that we didn’t get any lucky bounces and didn’t finish around the net.”
York took almost half as many shots (18), but made the most of their chances. Stephanie Dovaston scored the eventual game-winner at 16:08 of the first, standing alone and burying a feed past Brianna Tremblay. Andrea Joyce scored an unassisted goal in the second and Chloe Milano put the game out of reach on a 2-on-1 in the third.
Ryerson and York began the day in the ninth and 10th seeds in the OUA standings. Initially separated by one point, the Lions pulled away from the Rams and widened the gap to three.
“It’s certainly a team that we compare ourselves to and measure ourselves up to and certainly a team that we are looking to beat,” associate coach Michelle Janus said. “Those are two big points that we needed.”
Both teams almost played a penalty-free affair on Saturday, until a pair of coincidental minors in the games’ final eight minutes. The game wasn’t without some grit as both teams laid some big body-checks.
“They are a bit chippy,” Brodett said. “We were a little complacent about how to deal with that, but we played to our strengths. We’re a fast team and we’re physical as well. We dealt with it and pushed through ... they aren’t going to come into our house again and win.”
Ryerson’s discipline was characteristic of the team, as they entered the game with the least penalty minutes in the league. York started the day at the other end of the penalty minute spectrum, tied for the most PIM’s in the league.
Coach Janus was filling in for head coach Lisa Haley while she coaches the national women’s team in Finland. She wants to see her team continue to take lots of shots, but work on placing the puck better Sunday when they face UOIT.
“There was a few 2 on 1’s that we had and we put it right in (Lee’s) chest,” she said. “That’s going to be a whistle all game long. (We need) executions on 2 on 1’s, hitting that far pad and looking for rebound opportunities.”

Toronto @ UOIT
The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team allowed four third period goals as they dropped a 4-0 decision to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday night.
The two teams were evenly matched for the first two periods, with both teams skating to a scoreless draw.
Despite outshooting the Varsity Blues 17-13 in the third period, it was Toronto who would light up the scoreboard as they scored four straight goals to pick up the win.
Fifth year forward Callie Bazak scored two goals for Toronto, including the game winner at the 1:56 minute mark of the final frame. Taylor Day had two assists in the win.
Jessica Larabie stopped 32 of 36 Toronto shots for UOIT. Krista Funke made 33 saves for her first shutout of the season.
The teams are headed in opposite directions early in the season as the Ridgebacks are winless in six straight games while the Varsity Blues have won five in a row.

November 4 - UOIT @ Ryerson
The Ryerson Rams found their offence, but could not translate it into a win, losing to the UOIT Ridgebacks 7-4 Sunday afternoon at Mattamy Home Ice.
The teams traded goals all game and both busted out of two-game shutout streaks. The Rams (2-6-0) four goals tied a season high, while the Ridgeback's (3-6-1) seven shattered their previous high of three.
"We certainly put pucks in the net, more than we have in the past two games put together," associate coach Michelle Janus said. "But we didn't fore-check very well and didn't defend very well."
Samantha Pui ended Ryerson's goalless drought midway through the first period when her shot bounced off and over goaltender Jessica Larabie. The team finally caught a good bounce and ended their drought at 163:16.
After Pui's goal it was all UOIT as they scored three unanswered goals (Jacyln Gibson, Samantha Forchielli, Zoe Battie) to take a 3-1 advantage.
Sophomore defenceman Victoria Arci cut the deficit to one with her first career OUA goal in the second period. Arci saw the top corner from the blue line and finessed a wrist shot through traffic.
"Thank god I've got some pretty good aim," Arci said.
UOIT responded with a Jill Morillo goal 1:40 later and Ryerson starter Dana Carson left the game as the result of a collision on the play. Coach Janus said Carson was taken out of the game by the team trainers, but the coach does not believe she has a concussion.
Brianna Tremblay entered the game and was tested immediately, making an enormous glove save on a Ridgebacks two on none opportunity.
"That was my fault completely," Arci said. "Then she just completely came out of nowhere with that glove save and brought us back into the game."
The Rams were able to briefly cut the lead to one in the third period after MacKenzie Manning scored a spectacular one-handed breakaway goal. Unfortunately, before the goal could even be announced the Ridgebacks Alyssa Palmer-Dixon potted the eventual game-winner.
UOIT's Sarah Worthington extended the lead to 6-3 and Morillo added an empty-netter in the last 30 seconds. Pui scored her second of the game for Ryerson at 12:55.
The weekend was ultimately a missed opportunity for Ryerson to make up ground in the OUA standings. Both York and UOIT were one point up on the Rams at the start of each contest and were up by three at the final horn.
"It doesn't feel good to lose two games in a row on a weekend where we could have gotten four points," Arci said. "These were both games we could have won and should have won."
The Rams face a stiff test in their next game when they host the Queen's Gaels on Friday night. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.

Western @ Queen's
The No. 6-ranked Queen's Gaels were unable to bounce back from a 2-0 deficit, as they fell, 3-2, to the No. 10-ranked Western Mustangs in OUA women's hockey action at the Kingston Memorial Centre Sunday afternoon.
The Gaels played a predominantly offensive game in the first period putting up 18 shots, however it was Western's Carly Rolph (Guelph, Ont.) who scored, putting Western up 1-0. The remainder of the period had numerous scoring opportunities, however neither team was able to capitalize.
The Mustangs increased their lead to 2-0 with a goal scored by Samantha Nastasiuk (Barrie, Ont.) at 3:24 in the second period. Western controlled the puck in their end most of the period, but Queen's took control towards the end of the period and found a hole in the Mustangs defense during a 4-on-4 with a goal scored by Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) and assisted by Mary Coughlin (Amherstberg, Ont.) and Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.).
The third period was fast paced on both ends, however Madison Turk (Calgary, Alta.) added another goal for the Mustangs on a power play at 13:48. The Gaels had many scoring opportunities towards the end of the third period and Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) brought the deficit to just one goal with a power play goal at 18:12 assisted by Shawna Griffin (Calgary, Alta.) and Kristin Smith (Toronto, Ont.). With the power play continuing until the game's conclusion, the Gaels put up many shots, but were unable to score.
Karissa Savage (Calgary, Alta.) stopped 19 shots for the Gaels and Kelly Campbell (St. Thomas, Ont.) had 40 saves for the Mustangs. The Gaels are now 7-1-1 and the Mustangs move to 6-1-1.
The Gaels return to action Friday, November 9, as they head to Toronto to face the Ryerson Rams. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.

Toronto @ York
Kiri Langford's two-goal performance helped lead the York University Lions to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the rival University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 4) at Canlan Ice Sports.
The win was an impressive one over the No. 9 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues, who entered the contest with seven wins in their first nine games. The Lions are now 4-5-1 on the year, while the Varsity Blues slipped to 7-2-1.
Langford (Collingwood, Ont.) was responsible for the game winner five-and-a-half minutes into the third period, and also netted the team's second goal of the contest six minutes into the second period. She now has three goals on the season to go along with three assists and is tied for the team scoring lead.
The two squads played a high-energy first period, racing back and forth down the ice and trading scoring chances. The Lions' aggressive forecheck resulted in better opportunities than what the Blues could manage, and it paid off when Kristie Wilson (Hamilton, Ont.) banked the puck in the Blues' net off the back of goalie Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) at 11:40 of the first period. Team captain Chloe Milano (Maple, Ont.) and scoring leader Lisa Stathopulos (Toronto) earned assists on the goal.
York goaltender Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) continued the strong play that led the Lions to a shutout victory in their last game, allowing her team to complete the first period with a 1-0 lead.
The Blues applied pressure early in the second as they sought to answer quickly and did with a goal from team captain Kelly O'Hanlon (Markham, Ont.), who beat Lee with a one-timer on the two-on-one rush with an assist from Stacey Oue (Scarborough, Ont.) just over one minute into the period.
The Lions regained the led with a fantastic unassisted goal from Langford (Collingwood, Ont.), who rocketed down the ice from her own blue line, dodging Blues defenders and making her way to the high slot where she beat Kesteris with a hard wrist shot to the glove side at 6:11 for her first goal of the day.
Special teams became a factor as the Lions started taking penalties, at one point being called on to kill a 5-on-3 power play for just longer than a minute. Although they killed the 5-on-3, the Lions surrendered a power play goal as Amanda Ricker (Ottawa) beat Lee just under the left pad at 14:16 of the second. April Looije (Mississauga, Ont.) and Oue each contributed assists on the goal.
The teams finished the second period with an even score of 2-2.
Langford added her second goal of the day early in the third, finding the rebound off her own blocked shot and firing it past Kesteris on the glove side again at 5:31 of the final frame. Andrea Joyce (Oakville, Ont.) and Megan Finlay (Hamilton, Ont.) assisted on the play that would eventually be the game-winning goal.
The Lions had a strong all-around performance, outshooting the Varsity Blues 26-23 in the game, with Lee's outstanding goaltending allowing the Lions to upset the Varsity Blues, who sit at third place in OUA division rankings. Milano's incredible defensive effort on the penalty kill was also essential to the Lions' success, as she blocked two hard shots on the 5-on-3 advantage.
The Lions' next game is on Saturday (Nov. 10) in Kingston against the Queen's Gaels at 7:30pm. They'll also face off at UOIT next Sunday (Nov. 11) before returning home on Saturday (Nov. 24) to play the Brock Badgers at Canlan Ice Sports at 2pm.
