WESTERN TAKES HOME TITLE
The Western Mustangs claimed their first OUA women's soccer title since 1998 with a 2-1 win over the Queen's Golden Gaels in Kingston this weekend. The home team struck first as Eilish Mcconville got one by keeper Jessy Kapitany in the 18th minute. It wasn't until the second half when Jenna Byrne tied things up in the 58th minute. Kate Crowley scored in the 86th minute to break the tie and take the OUA banner back to London.
The Mustangs men's soccer team also claimed OUA gold this weekend, making it only the second time in OUA history that teams from the same school claimed both men and women's soccer titles in the same year. In fact, Western is the only school who has accomplished the double gold feat; the first time being in 1998.
Western was able to get by Final Four first-timers Laurentian 3-1 in the semi-final. Allison Oosterhuis netted two goals for the Mustangs. In the other semi-final, Sarah Barradas scored in the 76th minute to break a scoreless draw to give the home team Gaels the 1-0 win over Toronto.
Both Western and Queen's advance to the CIS Championship this upcoming weekend in Montreal.
In the bronze medal match, Toronto handily defeated Laurentian 4-1. For the Blues, it was their first OUA women's soccer medal in nine years.
