QUEEN'S TAKES CIS BRONZE OVER HOSTS
Following a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation time, Queen's scored on three of its first four tries in the shootout session, while Montreal could only put two balls past goalkeeper Kate Chambers, a junior from West Vancouver. Midfielder Marie-Josée Charbonneau, from Mascouche, Que. needed a goal to keep the Carabins hopes alive but sent the ball wide to the right of the net on Monteal's fifth and final attempt.
Queen's, making its fifth straight appearance at the nationals, captured the CIS title back in 1988 but had not won a medal since. The OUA finalist Gaels upset top-ranked Western 4-1 in their tournament opener on Friday, handing the Mustangs their first loss of the season, but lost 3-1 to McGill on Saturday.
Montreal was participating at the championship for the first time since the inception of its women's soccer program in 2001.
Queen's enjoyed a slight 13-12 edge in shots towards the net in regulation. Six of their shots reached keeper Aurelie Gendron-Cayouette, a rookie from Charlesbourg, Que., while Chambers only had to make three saves to earn the win and the shutout.
Chambers opened the penalty kicks session with a diving save against Nadine Paquette-Hudon, a defender from St. Jerome, Que., who was shooting first for the Carabins.
Queen's had a 3-2 lead after three attempts on each side. Sophomore striker Sarah Barradas, from Whitby, Ont., defender Andrea Pigozzo, from Guelph, Ont., and all-Canadian forward Eilish McConville, from Ottawa, found the back of the net for the Gaels, while defender Marie-Pierre Germain, from Trois-Rivieres, Que. and midfielder Veronique Dionne, from St. Jerome scored for Montreal.
After Montreal's Sandra Couture, a forward from St. George de Beauce, Que. hit the cross bar on the Carabins fourth attempt, striker Zoe Dyer, a native of Halifax, had a chance to win it for Queen's but Gendron-Cayouette made the save to keep the score at 3-2 and the Carabins in the game.
Charbonneau missed right seconds later to put an end to the contest.
Barradas was named Adidas player of the game for Queen's. Couture received the honours for Montreal.
