CARLETON AND OTTAWA TAKE LEAD IN EAST, WHILE YORK AND LAURIER GO UNDEFEATED IN WEST
The Carleton University Ravens Women's Soccer team defeated the Laurentian University Voyageurs, 1-0.
The Ravens played an excellent game on defense holding the host Voyageurs to no chances in the first half and controlling the play at midfield. Veteran Striker, Amber Prosia (Hamilton, Ontario) scored her second goal of the 2007 season at the 50th minute to give Carleton the lead.
Veteran Goalkeeper, Kate Shaugnessy (Ottawa, Ontario) played well in the Ravens' net stopping all the shots she faced to earn her first career shutout, for Carleton. "Our defense was excellent today, they played well and kept us in the game while it was still tied," said Head Coach Andy Nera.
This marks the second straight year the Women's program started with a perfect 2-0 record in the Near North.
Queen’s 0, Toronto 0
The Queen's Golden Gaels and Toronto Varsity Blues played to 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon in Kingston. The game was a defensive struggle with both teams combining for just 5 total shots on goal. The best chances came in the second half, 30 minutes in when Gael Sarah Buckham was called for a handball in the penalty area. Toronto’s Heidi Bargmann stepped up to take the spot kick against Queen's goalkeeper Hannah Soichet but Bargmann's shot was high and over the goal. Soichet made three saves while her counterpart Katie Rowland made 2.
After the game Gaels head coach Dave McDowell said he was not pleased with some of the effort put forth by his side. "Clearly we're not fit enough to play the way we want to right now. Our midfield presence was not as good as we would like". He added that it is not all doom and gloom "There are lots of good things with a young team but lots of things that we need to work on".
