CARLETON HELD BY NIPISSING, TORONTO CRUISES PAST RMC
The second ranked Carleton University Ravens (8-3-2) were held to a 2-2 draw by sixth place Nipissing in Friday's game at Keith Harris Stadium in Ottawa. The tie gave Nipissing their first ever point against the Ravens.
The game began with Carleton relentlessly attacking the Nipissing back line until Heather McKim (Oshawa, Ont.) scored her first goal of the 2007 season in the eighth minute. The momentum seemed to switch immediately when Nipissing equalized with a goal from Stephanie Stubbert (North Bay, Ont.), her first of two in the match.
Veteran Raven Hilary Pierce (Ottawa, Ont.) gave the home side the lead once again after finishing a penalty shot awarded in the 48th minute. But this was not enough to seal the fate of the Lakers. On the subsequent attack Nipissing's Stubbert scored her second to even the game at 2-2, how the match would finish.
Carleton was unable to clinch a playoff berth on Friday but did so the following day with a 2-1 victory over Laurentian (1-7-4). Nipissing is presently in sixth place in the East with eight points.
Toronto 5, RMC 0
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues (7-1-3) defeated the Royal Military College Paladins (1-7-3) in a convincing 5-0 victory at Varsity Stadium on Sunday. The victory helped to put the Blues in the CIS top ten rankings this week for the second time this season.
From the opening whistle of the game the Blues dictated play and created several scoring opportunities. It wasn't until the 33rd minute that Shirley Ho (Calgary, Alb.) was able to get the first of many past RMC goalkeeper Veronique Lussier (Russell, Ont.). One minute later Erica Basso (King City, Ont.) scored what would be her first of three on the day for the Blues. Before the halftime whistle, Basso netted another chance to create a comfortable 3-0 halftime lead.
The second half saw much of the same dominating play by Toronto, who moved the ball confidently, putting pressure on the RMC back line for much of the game. Basso completed her hat-trick in the 49th minute before teammate Melanie Seabra (Brampton, Ont.) would add the fifth and final Toronto goal with a clinical chip over the opposing keeper.
Toronto sits in third place at 24 points with games in hand over the University of Ottawa (11-1-0) and Carleton University (8-3-2), respectively. RMC are in eighth place with six points.
