YORKS WINS SILVER AT CIS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
NEW WATERFORD, N.S. - The tournament host Cape Breton University Capers captured their first Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy as CIS women's soccer champions on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 gold-medal win over the York Lions in front of a sold-out crowd of over 1500 home fans.

The AUS champion Capers' triumph marks the first CIS title in any sport for CBU, which came into the week with an 0-6 all-time record in three previous appearances at the CIS women's soccer tourney (2006, 2005, 2003).
The OUA champion Lions, who like the Capers were making their first appearance in the national final, claim their first CIS medal after finish fourth in 2006 and tied for seventh two years ago in two previous trips to the championship.
"When you think of the thousands of soccer players in Canada and how many people are trying to win this, it is amazing," commented CBU head coach Stephen "Ness" Timmons, who simply described the gold-medal win and the championship banner as "˜a very special moment'. "To be able to do this on your home field in front of your own fans is even more amazing."
Nicole Stewart opened the scoring for the home side after only 14 minutes of play, and the Capers doubled their lead four minutes later on a Lions own goal.
The Cape Breton defence took it from there, allowing only six shots on goal and two corner kicks the entire game.
York broke Jessica MacDermid's bid for a shutout with nine minutes left in regulation on a goal by Nicole Burling.
Tournament-MVP honours went to Sydney native Kylie Snow of the Capers.
"What can you say about Kylie Snow," said the 2000 CIS coach of the year of his third-year midfielder. "She plays like she is six-foot-four; she plays like she is the most valuable player of everything."
