QUEEN�S FINDS SCORING TOUCH, BROCK DEFEATS NO.4 RANKED YORK
The Queen’s University Golden Gaels (4-1-4) have found their scoring touch this weekend with two big wins over Laurention University (1-4-4) and Nipissing University (0-5-4).
After struggling to finish their chances earlier on this season, the Golden Gaels netted nine goals in two games this past weekend to move up to third place in the East.
Opening the weekend at home with a 5-0 win over Laurention, Renee MacLellan (Ottawa, Ont.) scored two goals in the win while goalkeeper Kaite McKenna () recorded the shutout. Ali Skinner (), Erin Smith () and Courtney Devane () added three others on Saturday.
On Sunday versus Nipissing MacLellan opened the scoring yet again giving Queen’s a 1-0 lead at halftime. Nipissing goalkeeper Samantha Behm () made several key saves in the first half to keep Nipissing in the match.
After halftime Queen’s pressed and produced three goals in just twenty minutes. Claire Parsons (), Katie Dalziel () and Renee MacLellan (Ottawa, Ont.) each tallied a goal in the onslaught.
Nipissing player Alexandra Instance (Pembroke, Ont.) responded a minute later with a strike past McKenna .
Brock 1, York 0
Brock University (4-2-2) stunned the #3 ranked York Lions (7-1-0) with a 1-0 victory on Sunday, handing the Lions their first loss of the season.
Badger freshman Cassandra Van Bakel (Aurora, Ont.) scored the lone goal in the match at the five minute mark to give Brock an early lead. It was Van Bakel’s fourth goal of the season, leading the team in scoring as she climbs up the OUA rankings.
In a tight match both York goalkeeper Aurelea Gumiela (Oshawa, Ont.) and Tiffany Scriver (Burlington, Ont.) were called upon to make several saves. Scriver registered the shutout, her fourth of the season, improving her goals against average to 0.75.
Brock has 14 points and is tied with Laurier for second in the west while York still remains in first place in the west with 21 points.
