LAURIER STAYS CLOSE TO THE TOP IN THE WEST, OTTAWA REMAINS UNDEFEATED IN EAST
The Brock University women's soccer team (3-2-1) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Laurier Golden Hawks (4-1-1) Sunday afternoon at home.
In the first half Laurier controlled the majority of the play but it was Brock netminder Tiffany Scriver (Burlington, Ont.) coming up with some key saves to keep the score at 0-0 after 45 minutes.
Eight minutes into the second half, the Golden Hawks Monique DaSilva (Bradford, Ont.) would beat Scriver to take a 1-0 lead. Just seven minutes later Ali McKee (Bracebridge, Ont.) would put Laurier up 2-0.
Despite the very young lineup, the Badgers would show a lot of character as they would answer back with back-to-back goals from freshman Jill Geier (Ancaster, ON) in the 67th and 74th minutes. They were her team leading fourth and fifth goals of the season.
In the 83rd minute, Laurier's Jen Fewster-Yan (Scarborough, Ont.) would capitalize on a Badgers defensive lapse scoring the game winner over the outstretched hands of Scriver.
Ottawa 8, Trent 0
Defender Amanda Robinson (Fredrickton, Ont.) scored twice for six goals in four conference games as the No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees (5-0-0) opened with a big early lead and cruised to an 8-0 shutout over Trent University (0-4-1).
The Gee-Gees were ahead 4-0 after 14 minutes. Elise Desjardins (Cumberland, Ont.) kick started the offence with a goal one minute in before Robinson sent a pair of bending free kick lasers past Sarah Asbreuk at the three and 14-minute marks. Robinson's markers came sandwiched around Valerie May's (Ottawa, Ont.) tap-in at eight minutes from inside the box.
Desjardins scored her second goal in the opening minute of the second half. Jessica Nooyen (30), Trinidad Ruiz (Ottawa, Ont.) (52), and Sarah d'Apollonia (Dartmouth, NS.) (58) also scored for the Gee-Gees.
Ottawa goalkeeper Kat Vulic (Oakville, Ont.) recorded her third conference shutout in four games but faced only one shot, a slow roller in the first half.
