WESTERN AND GUELPH START 2008 WITH A WIN
The Brock University men's basketball team (5-4 OUA West, 13-11 overall) five game winning streak came to an end as they dropped an 81-75 decision on the road against the Western Mustangs this past Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
The Badgers led by three at the half 43-40, but struggled the entire second half from the field shooting a season low 23.5% (8-for-34) including just 3-for-18 (16.7%) from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes.
In his return to the Badgers lineup for the first time in two months, senior Rohan Steen (Welland, Ont.) led the offense with a 19-point performance. Senior Brad Rootes (Niagara Falls, Ont.) added 18 points and seven rebounds, while junior Mike Kemp (Niagara Falls, Ont.) rounded out the Brock scoring adding 13 points.
Leading the Mustangs offense was Matt Curtis who had a game-high 23 points. Brad Smith added 21 points, while Division I transfer Colin LaForme recorded a double-double adding 10 points and 13 rebounds in the victory.
Guelph 86, Windsor 84
The Lancer men's basketball team opened up the second half of their season on Saturday night with a close 86-84 loss to the visiting Guelph Gryphons.
Both teams started out strong, with the score tied at 18-18 after the first quarter.
Guelph took a slight lead in the second quarter, after nailing some key three point shots, and Windsor went into the half down 42-35.
Despite creating a deficit in the second half, the Lancers came back and gave themselves a number of opportunities to win. Unfortunately, Windsor was unable to pull ahead of Guelph, falling by only one basket.
Offensively, Ryan Steer led the Lancers with 24 points, while Kevin Kloostra contributed 22 points and 9 rebounds. Defensively, Greg Surmacz had a game high 15 rebounds and 19 points.
The Lancers also shot 17-17, for a perfect 100% from the free throw line.
