CARLETON WINS 2008 OUA WILSON CUP MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Despite the weather the crowd was close to 1,000 fans and both teams came out strong and the first quarter was a high tempo affair with Carleton taking the advantage 20-17 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Western stayed with the 5-time defending CIS National Champions and trailed by 4-points at the intermission, 37-33.
The third quarter, which has been both schools best point production stanza in the 2008 OUA post season solved nothing as the feisty OUA West Champion, Mustangs held their own and trailed the Ravens by only 6-points after three quarters, 58-52.
In the fourth quarter the veteran Raven team, with a deep bench were able to wear down the young feisty Mustang team out scoring Western by 10-points in the final quarter to win their 4th OUA Title in 9 years by 16-points.
The Ravens were again led by the OUA Player of the Year Aaron Doornekamp, Odessa, Ontario who scored 23-points, pulled down 9-rebounds and dished out 4-assists, to be named the Wilson Cup Most Valuable Player. The Ravens top scorer was OUA East All-Star, Stuart Turnbull, Kingston, Ontario who led all scorers with a game high 30-point performance. Ryan Bell, Ottawa, Ontario playing his final home game, at the Ravens' Nest, scored 10-points and led Carleton with 10 boards as Carleton out rebounded Western 49 to 31 for the game.
The Mustangs top scorers were Matthew Curtis, Hamilton, Ontario, with 13-points, Jason Milliquet, Sarnia, Ontario and Ryan Barbeau, Belleville, Ontario both netting 11-points.
The Ravens also won the Wilson Cup in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
The Ravens will play next weekend, at the CIS National Championship "Final 8" tournament, hosted by the Ravens, at Scotiabank Place. The CIS will release the 8 teams participating in the tournament, the schedule and pairings tomorrow night around 6:00PM EST.
