OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: RAVENS DOMINATE DEFENDING CHAMPS
A Michael Kenny three-pointer opened the scoring for the Ravens to take the early 3-2 lead as the No. 8 Ravens went on a 13-point run. Stuart Turnbull (Kingston, Ont.) had the highlight of the quarter when, after sinking two foul shots, stole the ball from the opposition only to slam it home for a decisive 13-2 lead. Ottawa native Kevin McCleery and Turnbull each recorded eight points in the opening quarter, helping Carleton to a 29-12 lead.
After a scoreless first three minutes in the second quarter, the Ravens jumped out to their biggest advantage of the half, leading the Badgers 46-26 with five minutes remaining. First-year forward Kyle Smendziuk (Kanata, Ont.) stepped into the game and scored five points, including a three-point play to end the quarter. Carleton extended their advantage to 21 points at the break, up 50-29 on the visitors.
The Ravens opened the second half with momentum from the first and a Rob Saunders shot from downtown would increase the home side's lead to 24 points with eight minutes on the clock. Carleton would dominate Brock on the boards to assist them in widening the gap further, leading by 34 points, 75-41, after three quarters of play.
Brock would attempt to crawl back into the game as they slowly diminished their deficit to 22 points at the six-minute mark. However, a remarkable four-point play by Aaron Doornekamp (Odessa, Ont.) and a subsequent three from Turnbull would put the game out of reach for the Badgers, trailing 86-57. Carleton closed out a dominant 92-67 win over the defending national champion Badgers to cap off a successful weekend at home.
The Ravens out-rebounded the Badgers 43-19 in the game.
Doornekamp led the scorers for Carleton with a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds. Turnbull was narrowly behind him with 23 points and two boards while teammates McCleery and Kenny each chipped in with 10 points.
For the Badgers, Joel Whitty (St. Catharines, Ont.) led his team with 14 points and two boards. Owen White (Port Hope, Ont.) added 12 points and three rebounds, while Didi Mukendi (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Joe Kendrick (New Minus, N.S.) each totalled 11 points on the night.

NO. 8 OTTAWA 67, GUELPH 60
OTTAWA, Ont. - Fourth-year guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe led all scorers with a 26-point performance in a 67-60 win over the visiting Guelph Gryphons to grant Gee-Gee coach Dave DeAverio the 100th victory of his career in regular season Saturday night.
"I didn't know that", said DeAverio, who was much more focused on his players' win. "It's important for us to get this win tonight, they were physical, we're not used to that kind of basketball."
DeAverio also mentioned the importance of staying in first place of the OUA East division. The No. 8 Gee-Gees now improve to 5-1 in the OUA East and are tied for first place with cross-town rivals and CIS No. 1 Carleton Ravens.
Guelph fell to 3-3 in the OUA West.
The Gee-Gees led by only a basket at the half, but came alive in the third quarter thanks in part to Gibson-Bascombe's 100 percent free throw average and team-high 10 rebounds. Teammates Dax Desserault and Warren Ward both added 12 points and four rebounds apiece. Nick Pankerichan led the Guelph offensive effort with 12 points and three rebounds. Guelph dominated the key, out-rebounding the Gee-Gees 41 to 36.
"They're a very physical team, they play hard", said Gibson-Bascombe.
When asked about DeAverio's 100th win, Gibson-Bascome had only good things to say about his coach, "He's a fantastic coach; he pushes us to the limit."

WATERLOO 59, RYERSON 54
WATERLOO, Ont. - After two weekends on the road to start the season, the Waterloo Warriors had their OUA home opener on Friday night, hosting the Ryerson Rams. The Warriors managed to escape with a win, their fourth in a row, 59-54.
The Warriors started quick, missed a lay-up off the game opening tip, but scored the first six points of the contest. They widened the score to a 10-point lead in the opening frame, before ending the first quarter up 17-10. In the second frame, Waterloo twice held 11-point leads, but Ryerson reduced the margin to a 35-28 lead for Waterloo at half time.
Waterloo also spread the scoring in the first half with Cam McIntyre providing 11, Matt Hayes 10 and Jordan Hannah nine points. Meanwhile, Boris Bakovic has 14 of Ryerson's 28 points in the first half.
Waterloo started the second half by pushing the margin to 11 again. Then Waterloo simply stopped scoring, not getting a single point in over five minutes of play. Ryerson took little advantage as the third quarter provided a 12-8 score in favour of Ryerson.
In the final frame, Ryerson hit the opening basket to tie the game at 43-43. McIntyre quickly returned at the other end with a three to put Waterloo back in front. However, the Waterloo offence fizzled again and with four minutes to play Ryerson took their first and only lead of the game 54-52. Ryerson would not score again.
Down by a single point, Ryerson had the ball with 30 seconds remaining and turned it over. Waterloo had their opportunity to extend the lead but missed the field goal. A batted rebound by Dave Burnett was recovered by Waterloo with the shot clock no longer in play. McIntyre was fouled on the inbounds play with five seconds remaining, with the referees judging it intentional. McIntyre calmly hit both free throws, making the margin now three. Waterloo was awarded the ball on the foul call and another pair of free throws ended the scoring.
Combined, the two teams shot a woeful 8 for 46 from the three point line. Waterloo did manage to shoot almost 50 percent from two-point range, finishing at 37 percent shooting. Ryerson only managed 28 percent on the night.
Bakovic led all scorers with 23 points and 14 rebounds. He was the only Ram in double figures. For Waterloo, McIntyre hit for 20 points, while Hayes had 16 points and six rebounds.
