NO.1 RAVENS EDGE NO.5 GEE-GEES IN FRONT OF 9,124
The Carleton University Ravens defeated the University of Ottawa Gee Gees, 70-66, to win the 2nd annual MNBA Capital Hoops Classic to improve their OUA leading record to 16-0 (8-0 against OUA East opponents). The Gee Gees record drops to 13-3 in the OUA East.
Ottawa came out strong and had the early lead in the game but the score would go back and forth with the lead changing hands four times before Ottawa would go into the second quarter up 14-10. In the second quarter, Carleton would come to life out scoring Ottawa 19-14 to go into the intermission leading by one-point, 29-28. Veterans Stuart Turnbull, Kingston, Ontario and Aaron Doornekamp, Odessa, Ontario put on a clinic as they each scored in double figures in the first half Turnbull (11-points) and Doornekamp (10-points). Doornekamp had several incredible rebounds to keep Carleton on the offensive in the second quarter.
The third quarter was again more typical back and forth play by both teams with the lead changing hands several times before Turnbull hit several key shots to give Carleton a two-point lead after the quarter, 47-45.
In the fourth quarter Ottawa's David Labentowicz tied the game 52-52 as he sank a free throw with four minutes to go. The momentum of the game did not slow down with a number of time outs within the last two minutes of the game. The Ravens' Mike Kenny, Ottawa, Ontario made both his free throws advancing Carleton's lead to four points. Ryan Bell of Orleans, Ontario clinched the game on a three pointer putting the Ravens up by 5 points, with under one minute remaining.
The Ravens would prevent Ottawa from getting any shots off until the final seconds of the game, holding on for a four-point victory 70-66.
Aaron Doornekamp led Carleton with a 20-point performance, Stuart Turnbull, added 14-points, 5-rebounds and 2-steals to be named the Rogers TV 22 Player of the Game. Carleton out rebounded Ottawa 39 to 23 for the game as Doornekamp's 10-rebounds led the way for Carleton.
Brock 96, Guelph 70
The No. 9 ranked Brock University men's basketball team (10-5 OUA) rolled past the Guelph Gryphons by the score of 96-70. With the victory the Badgers take over sole possession of second place in the OUA West.
Brock led 17-8 after the first quarter and went on a 12-3 run early to end the second quarter leading 44-24 at the half. The Badgers went up by as many as 27 points (51-24) two minutes into the third quarter, on route to their biggest OUA West conference win of the season.
The Badgers shot a season high 91.7% (33-for-36) from the charity stripe as well as shooting 44.8% (26-for-58) from the field. In conference play, the Badgers are 8-0 when shooting over 40 percent from the floor.
Once again Brock had five players in double figures led by junior Mike Kemp (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who led all scorers with 26 points including 5-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Brad Rootes (Niagara Falls, Ont.) recorded 20 points, six assists and five rebounds. Senior Rohan Steen (Welland, Ont.) added 14 points while seniors Scott Murray (Welland, ont.) Owen White (Port Hope, Ont.) chipped in with 13 and 11 points respectively.
Rootes became the all-time Brock rebound leader at the guard position
surpassing Jamie Duncan (619). Murray moved into 13th all-time in career points surpassing Kelly Grace (1513) as well as moving into a tie for 4th all-time in career assists with Sam Fuca (336). Kemp moved into 20th all-time in career points surpassing Rob DeMott (1277).
