RAVENS TOP FIRST M-BASKETBALL RANKINGS
OTTAWA, Ont. – The Carleton Ravens men and Simon Fraser Clan women lead the first CIS basketball national rankings of the 2008-09 season.
The Ravens, who saw their extraordinary streak of five straight CIS titles come to an end last spring, top the inaugural coaches poll for the third consecutive season and for the sixth time in seven years after receiving 36 of 39 first-place votes. The reigning OUA champions led all 14 polls in 2007-08.
The Ravens are once again off to a furious start this fall posting a 10-1 non-conference record, including a perfect 6-0 mark against CIS competition. They will play two more pre-season games this weekend down in the United States, against Cincinnati and Morehead State, before kicking off the OUA schedule at Windsor and Western Ontario, on November 7-8.
Rounding out the first men's basketball poll are No. 2 UBC, which received the three other first-place votes, No. 3 Concordia, No. 4 Windsor, No. 5 Victoria, No. 6 StFX, No. 7 McGill, No. 8 Calgary, No. 9 Ottawa and No. 10 Dalhousie.
The reigning CIS champion Brock Badgers finished 12th in the voting.
On the women's side, the Clan, who suffered a disappointing first-round loss at last year's CIS championship, top the initial rankings for a second straight campaign. SFU also led all 14 polls in 2007-08.
The reigning Canada West champion Clan kept a 3-2 record in non-conference play, including a 3-0 mark versus CIS opponents, before opening the regular season last Friday night with a convincing 68-44 win over Trinity Western.
Top-ranked SFU travels to Victoria this weekend for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader against the 0-2 Vikes.
Rounding out the inaugural women's poll are No. 2 Alberta, No. 3 Windsor, No. 4 Saskatchewan, No. 5 Dalhousie, No. 6 Winnipeg, No. 7 Calgary, No. 8 Regina, No. 9 UQAM and No. 10 Laurentian.
The defending CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds, who started conference play with losses at Saskatchewan and Alberta, took 13th place in the voting.
Other schools leading CIS rankings this week are Montreal in women's soccer, Carleton in men's soccer, Guelph in both women's and men's cross country, Laval in football, McGill in women's hockey, Alberta in men's hockey, Montreal in women's volleyball, and Alberta in men's volleyball.
