LAFORME, OLEXIUK LEAD MUSTANGS TO VICTORY
Thames Hall, the old home of the Mustangs prior to the construction of Alumni Hall, the team's current home, was full with kids attending Western's summer basketball camp. They had plenty to cheer about.
Five Mustangs registered into double-digit scoring - Garrett Olexiuk (16), Alex Brzozowicz (14), Matt Curtis (14 points and 9 assists), Brad Smith (12) and LaForme who led both teams in points and rebounds and added three blocks and a steal. Meanwhile, Keenan Jeppesen had nine points in his Mustangs' debut along with a pair of blocks.
The Mustangs looked sharp in transition, but showed rust at the charity stripe shooting 25 percent (3/12) in the first half. They hit 50 percent from three-point range and were solid in transition.
With an early lead and excellent defence, Western looked in control from the start. Leading 29-21 after the opening quarter, the Ravens from Indiana started to hit from outside and take control of the tempo. Western lead 47-44 at the half.
In the third quarter, Western exploded for 31 points and a 78-63 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs also outrebounded Anderson 43-34 including 30 defensive boards.
Guards Mike Russell and Ty Riddle paced the Ravens, an NCAA Div. 3 team, with 19 points each.
Western travels to play at Windsor's St. Denis Centre against Southern Illinois and Morgan State over the weekend. Both are NCAA Div. 1 schools.
