WESTERN MEN'S SOCCER TEAM WIN OLD FOURS TOURNAMENT
Sophomore Pat Mroczek (St. Catharines, Ont.) scored at the eight-minute mark for Western and Niko Mavrikos scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute. McGill poured on the pressure to score in the 89th minute but ran out of time before they were able to score the equalizer.
Queen's edged Toronto 2-1 in the men's consolation final.
Meanwhile in women's action, McGill thumped Queen's 3-0 in the championship final, while Toronto earned third pace with a 3-2 shootout win over Western after the teams were deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of regulation time.
Western's men advanced to the Old Fours pre-season tournament final against McGill with a 2-0 win over the Queen's Gaels on Aug. 29. The Redmen were 2-0 winners over Toronto in the other Aug. 29 semifinal.
Mustang Nick Agam scored in the third minute against Queen's on a cross from Pat Mroczek. Daniel Baxa scored Western's second goal on a blast from 20 metres out that dipped over the Gaels' keeper's hands. Louis Florjancic played the full 90 minutes in goal to earn the clean sheet.
The Mustangs women were not as fortunate, losing 2-0 to the Gaels on Aug. 29. After a 0-0 draw on Aug. 30, the Western women lost in penalty kicks 3-2 to Toronto in the consolation final. McGill and Queen's play at 1 p.m. in the women's final.
