RAMS DROP 2-0 DECISION TO VARSITY BLUES IN MEN'S SOCCER
The match was rich with offensive chances on both sides of the field, especially in the first half, and if it wasn't for solid play by both goalkeepers, the score could have been higher.
The game started with a bang when Toronto striker Nordo Gooden (Toronto) broke in between two Rams defenders and fired just wide within the first minute of play. The close call seemed to set the tone for the entire half as Toronto had several more chances within the first 45 minutes. Gooden had two more scoring opportunities, one off a free kick, that were both stopped by Rams keeper Anthony Volpe (Brampton, Ont.). Volpe came up with a handful of saves for Ryerson including a brilliant save on a breakaway by Blues midfielder Dylan Bams (Fanny Bay, B.C.)
The Rams also pressed offensively in the first half and had several close calls. Ryerson striker Vince D'Elia (Maple, Ont.) had three near misses in the half including two near connections on crosses from Janarthan Sadacharalingam. Sadacharalingam (Scarborough, Ont.), aside from setting up D'Elia a couple times, had a chance to score of his own but could not solve Toronto keeper John Smits (Mississauga, Ont.).
The Blues eventually made good on one of their chances in the 44th minute when Toronto native Yannis Gionniotis' header found the back of the net on a free kick to give the Blues a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
The second half didn't see as many scoring chances but both teams still made it close on a few occasions. D'Elia got close a couple more times for Ryerson as wells as midfielders Adrian Mancini (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Hugo Fernandes (Toronto).
Volpe continued to play strong for the Rams until the 77th minute when a miscommunication with Rams defender Markus Molder (Toronto) led to Toronto doubling their lead. It appeared that Volpe and Molder crossed their singles as to who would take the ball in Ryerson's 18-yard box just long enough to let Gooden swoop in and net a goal for the Blues to make it 2-0.
The Rams continued to push for the remainder of the game but it was all for naught as Toronto preserved the 2-0 shutout.
"We had some improvement and I thought at times we played just as well as Toronto," said Rams head coach Ivan Joseph, who admitted he is tired of losing and would like to see the team notch their first win this weekend.
The Rams, still in search of that first win, see their record fall to 0-3-1 with the loss, while Toronto improves to 2-1-1 with the win.
Ryerson is in action this weekend as they host Trent on Saturday and Carleton on Sunday.
