OUA M-SOCCER ROUNDUP: ZELT'S FIRST HALF MARKERS LEAD NO. 10 GAELS TO VICTORY
The victory was the fifth straight for the No. 10-ranked Gaels (8-1-4) who have only allowed one goal in those five contests.
Zelt would open the scoring just three minutes into the game when a loose ball off a corner kick found its way to the top of the box. He gathered the ball and buried it past the RMC keeper to give Queen's a 1-0 lead.
The rookie defender would strike again late in the half when his shot took a crazy deflection off an RMC defender, looped over the keeper's head, hit the cross bar and fell into the net.
From there, the Gaels were able to cruise as Jordan Brooks (Angus, Ont.) and Nathan Klemencic (Trenton, Ont.) scored five minutes apart early in the second half to seal the win.
Queen's keeper Sean Martin-Courtright of Calgary made three saves for the shutout.
The Gaels wrap up their regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Ottawa to take on the Carleton Ravens. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
LAURENTIAN 1, NIPISSING 1
At Nipissing, it was miserable night weather-wise as cold winds and blowing rain peppered the Education Centre Field, however, the Nipissing Lakers left the field knowing they had earned a hard fought point after a 1-1 draw against their northern rivals, the Laurentian Voyageurs.
The match was certainly built up as a clash of rivals and it certainly didn't disappoint as the contest displayed a high tempo along with a physical edge.
Laurentian's Rudy Muteba (Sudbury, Ont.) opened the scoring at the 20 minute mark while Lakers third-year midfielder Kwadwo Adusei (Brampton, Ont.) equalized the contest as he converted a Lakers corner kick.
Both teams would exchange some opportunities with the best one of the first half coming in injury time as Lakers forward Tom Duncan (Lindsay, Ont.) used his speed to fly past by the defenders and blast two shots at the Laurentian keeper who was up to the task. The half finish tied 1-1.
As field conditions deteriorated in the second half both teams were somewhat cautious in the early going. The Lakers picked up steam as the half moved on and Adusei made a nice run down the left flank dishing the ball to teammate Shane Karn (Callander, Ont.) who banked it off the Laurentian defender for a corner kick. The corner kick was headed by Sean Raposo and sailed just over the crossbar.
The best scoring chance of the second half came when Nipissing's Odean Thompson (Brampton, Ont.) make a great individual effort to bring the ball up-field and blasted a shot that beat the keeper but rang off the crossbar and was cleared out of dangers way by Laurentian.
With seven minutes remaining in the game Muteba had his sights on collecting his second goal of the game but his laser shot narrowly missed its intended target. The Lakers managed to create a corner kick in injury time however the header was never close and the game would end 1-1.
Lakers keeper Cory Schwartz (Owen Sound, Ont.) made three saves while Scott Cliff (Hanmer, Ont.) made seven.
The Lakers (2-5-6) remain in sixth place with 12 points while Laurentian (6-5-2) is tied for third with Carleton with 20 points.
The Riley Gallow Cup (named in memory of the son of Laurentian women's coach Rob Gallow) was awarded to Laurentian who won by an aggregate score of two.
The Lakers will finish off the regular season schedule on Sunday, Oct. 25 as they travel to Peterborough, Ont. to face the Trent Excalibur.
