OUA M-SOCCER ROUNDUP: NO. 4 LIONS ROAR OVER NO. 8 GRYPHONS
Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ont.) picked up the shutout, and five different players had goals to give York the edge over their rivals.
Francesco Bruno (Toronto) opened the scoring for York in the second minute, knocking the ball in off a corner kick amid a mess of bodies in front of the net.
Andrea Lombardo (Toronto) was a force on the pitch, picking up the third goal in the 19th minute and setting up a goal by Luca Forno (Toronto) in the 11th minute with a beautiful curving kick that fooled the Guelph goalie and left Forno open.
David Nogaro (Richmond Hill, Ont.) also scored and Douglas Sereti (Nairobi, Kenya) capped off the scoring in the 89th minute. Sereti celebrated with a back flip.
York now leapfrogs Windsor in the OUA West standings to sit atop the conference with a 6-2-2 record for 20 points. They move four points ahead of third-place Guelph (5-4-1).
TORONTO 2, CARLETON 1
At Carleton, the No. 7 Toronto Varsity Blues (8-1-2) edged the host Ravens 2-1.
Fourth-year player Alexander Raphael (East York, Ont.) gave the Varsity Blues a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute as Toronto kept its advantage at halftime.
In the second half, third-year midfielder Scott Nesbitt (Scarborough, Ont.) earned an important insurance marker for the Varsity Blues at the 54th minute. That was because first-year striker Jonni Okai (Ottawa) cut Carleton's deficit in half in the 68th minute. But that was as close as the Ravens (4-4-2) would come as Toronto held on to the victory.
QUEEN'S 2, NIPISSING 2
At Nipissing, the Queen's Gaels (4-1-4) and host Lakers (2-4-3) battled to a 2-2 draw.
The Gaels used a pair of second half goals to earn an important point on the road.
With the team down 2-0 entering the second half, Remi Ojo (Toronto) pulled the Gaels to within a goal when he found the back of the net in the 54th minute.
The Gaels continued to pressure the Lakers and in the 80th minute, Michael Arnold (London) evened the score and in doing so, earned the Gaels a single point.
Mohammed Nyangado and Thomas Duncan (Lindsay, Ont.) scored for Nipissing.
LAURENTIAN 1, RMC 0
At Laurentian, the host Voyageurs (6-2-1) downed the RMC Paladins (0-7-1) by a 1-0 count.
