VOYAGEURS SEND LAKERS HOME WITH 2-0 LOSS IN MEN'S SOCCER
The game got off to a quick start with both teams exchanging shots. Cliff made a diving save in the ninth minute to keep the score tied. In the 28th minute Davor Alisic of Charlottetown sent a header right off the crossbar and over the net. A penalty kick was awarded when a Laurentian player was fouled in the box. Keir made no mistake and scored to put the Voyageurs up 1-0 in the 30th minute. Two minutes later Steve Rachkowski of Lively, Ont. had a great shot that was turned away by Likuski. With Laurentian pressing, Keir put away his second goal of the half in the 38th minute on a great pass from Alisic to make the score 2-0. The first half would come to a close with the Voyageurs leading 2-0.
In the 59th minute with the Lakers on the offensive attack, they were awarded a penalty kick. After scoring what appeared to be their first goal of the game, it was immediately called back. This momentum shift seemed to deflate the Lakers for the next 10 minutes. Cliff stopped all seven shots he faced later in the second half to preserve the 2-0 win.
"Good to get the first win out of the way. We had a great first half, but I thought we hung on in the second half," said head coach Carlo Castrechino. "I thought Nipissing really pushed us and we have some things to work on. We hung on and are happy to get three points."
