WARRIORS EDGE GRYPHONS 2-1 IN MEN'S SOCCER
Guelph's record moves to (5-5-1) and the Warrior's to (4-4-3).
The first goal of the game was scored by Warrior player Bill Bean (Waterloo, Ont.), just minutes before the first half ended. Twenty minutes into the second half, Bean scored a second goal for Waterloo. Robbie Murphy (Ottawa) scored Guelph's only goal with less than three minutes left in the game.
During the first half of the game it was clear that both teams were equally matched. The ball was played in and out of either end, with both team's defence holding strong. Fifteen minutes into the game Steve Johnstone's (Ottawa) quick thinking almost landed him a goal but Waterloo's defence interfered.
Waterloo's Lean Latty (Toronto) was an outstanding defensive player that relentlessly drove Guelph's players out of the Warrior's end. Bill Bean had several shots on Gryphon net until one finally broke through in the 43rd minute of the first half, scoring the Warrior's first goal.
With the first half ending with a goal for Waterloo, the Gryphon offence seemed to pick up their game in the second. Even with this added energy Waterloo's offence still made their way into Guelph territory, which led to their second goal of the game by Bean, with 23 minutes left in the game. A great play was made by the Gryphons when Arthur Berlin (Aurora, Ont.) fired a corner shot right in front of the Warrior's net and Colin MacMillan (Newmarket, Ont.) ran in to score – but was intercepted by Mike Saccone (Aurora, Ont.).
Guelph began to drive the ball into Waterloos end and there were a number of shots on net from various players. Finally, with less than three minutes left in the game, Murphy scored Guelph's only goal of the game. The last three minutes were played with great concentration, as Guelph tried to tie up the score. Although a great effort was put forth it was unsuccessful and the Warriors took home a 2-1 win.
