OUA MEN'S SOCCER ROUNDUP: NO. 4 LIONS DEFEAT NO. 8 GRYPHONS
The game began with two quick goals from York's Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) and Andrea Lombarda (Toronto). It seemed only a minor setback as the Gryphon's responded aggressively but it was followed by two more goals by Stefan Zlatanov (Scarborough, Ont.) and Dominic Antonini (Winnipeg). Guelph's only goal came from Colin Aubrey (Ottawa) who played a great offensive game throughout.
The first two goals by York were scored in the early minutes of the first half, which shocked the Guelph team into action. They played a solid game, relentlessly attacking their opposition. Aubrey had a shot on net 15 minutes into the game but York goalie Alim Karim caught it just in time. Lombarda sent a sure fire shot straight to the top of Gryphon net, but Adam Jovanovic (Kitchener, Ont.) ripped into the air and punched the ball straight out of the danger zone – making for quite an impressive save.
Zlatanov scored York's third goal after what seemed to be a defensive breakdown near the net, leaving Jovanovic to fend for himself. Minutes later, Robbie Murphy (Ottawa) saw the perfect opportunity to score but York defence collided into him and he lost control. It seemed as though the Gryphon's morale never faltered even after York's solid lead.
The second half was played with as much audacity as the first by both the Gryphons and the Lions. The Gryphon's aggressively pushed the Lions out of their end, giving their offence a chance for a much needed goal. Near the middle of the second half Aubrey takes this opportunity and scores Guelph's first goal.
Antonini responded by driving into the Gryphon end and shooting past defence and Javanovic scoring the Lion's fourth and final goal of the game. In hopes of bringing home another, Murphy attacked Lions defence but was unable to break through their line. David Nagaro on York came in at the right time and warded off any further attempted shots by the Guelph Gryphons, ending the game 4-1.
LAURIER 2, WATERLOO 0
