OUA M-SOCCER ROUNDUP: LAURIER UPSETS GUELPH; EARNS FIRST VICTORY OF 2009
The Hawks took an early lead thanks to an eighth-minute goal from third-year striker Mathieu Mori (Mississauga, Ont.).
The score would remain 1-0 until the 72nd minute, when a shot off the boot of Laurier's Hugo Hernandez (Markham, Ont.) beat Guelph keeper Adam Jovanovic (Kitchener, Ont.).
Laurier goalkeeper Jarrett Humphreys (Waterloo, Ont.) backstopped his team to victory.
YORK 1, WATERLOO 1
The York Lions and the Waterloo Warriors, both nationally ranked squads, battled to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
No. 4 York took the game lead, 64 minutes into the match, when a Francesco Bruno (Toronto) shot beat Waterloo goalkeeper Mike Saccone (Aurora, Ont.).
No. 9 Waterloo evened the match in the 72nd minute with a goal from Sohyb Basir.
QUEEN'S 1, RMC 0
Jordan Brooks' (Angus, Ont.) early goal would stand as the game winner on Saturday, as the Queen's Gaels narrowly beat the Royal Military College Paladins by a score of 1-0.
The goal was Brooks' fifth of the season, boosting him into a tie for second-place in the OUA scoring race.
Gaels keeper Sean Martin-Courtright (Calgary) made six saves to preserve the shutout.
TORONTO 3, LAURENTIAN 1
In a battle of two of the OUA East's top teams, The Toronto Varsity Blues scored three second-half goals to defeat the No. 7 Laurentian Voyageurs 3-1 on Saturday.
Laurentian took the early lead four minutes into the game, thanks to a David Hysen (Sudbury, Ont.) header. Despite consistent offensive pressure from the Voyageurs, the score remained 1-0 at the half.
The second half belonged to Toronto. Dylan Bams (Fanny Bay, B.C.) evened the match in the 52nd minute, with a goal from close range. Alexander Raphael (East York, Ont.), soon followed suit, scoring in the 69th minute, and Nordo Gooden (Kingston, Jamaica) added a last-minute insurance marker to secure the win.
RYERSON 1, NIPISSING 1
At Nipissing, Jeff Portugues (North Bay, Ont.) scored a goal in the 80th minute to give the Lakers a 1-1 tie against the visiting Ryerson Rams on Saturday.
The game remained scoreless until close to halftime, when Adrian Mancini (Richmond Hill, Ont.) gave Ryerson the lead at the 45th minute.
CARLETON 2, TRENT 0
At Trent, the visiting Carleton Ravens defeated the Trent Excalibur by a 2-0 count on Saturday.
Aghiles Abdesselam (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Joey Kewin (London, Ont.) both scored for the Ravens. Samuel Hincks (Guelph, Ont.) earned the shutout win in net.
WINDSOR 1, MCMASTER 0
At Windsor, Eric Cirouski (Windsor, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal in the second half to lift the Lancers over the McMaster Marauders on Saturday.
Third-year goalkeeper Dan Mendonca (London, Ont.) earned the victory in net.
WESTERN 2, BROCK 1
At Western, the Mustangs pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Brock Badgers on Saturday.
Eric Amato (Toronto) and Mark Pocrnic (London, Ont.) knocked home first half goals for the Mustangs.
First-year player Adrian Cammelli (Niagara Falls, Ont.) responded for Brock in the final minute of the game.
GUELPH 1, WATERLOO 0
In a clash of two of the OUA's top teams, the No. 10 Guelph Gryphons (4-1-1) emerged victorious over the No. 9 Waterloo Warriors (3-1-2) on Sunday.
The game was an evenly matched affair with both teams recording five shots on goal.
Ultimately it was a 30th minute shot off the foot of rookie striker Robbie Murphy (Ottawa) that broke the tie and stood as the game winner.
RYERSON 1, LAURENTIAN 0
At Laurentian, the Ryerson Rams (3-3-2) pulled out an important 1-0 road victory against the No. 7-ranked Voyageurs (4-2-1) on Sunday.
Alex Braletic (Thornhill, Ont.) scored in the 22nd minute to give the Rams a lead they would not relinquish.
Anthony Volpe (Brampton, Ont.) earned the shutout in goal for Ryerson.
TORONTO 2, NIPISSING 0
At Nipissing, the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-1-2) scored two goals in the second half to earn a road win against the Lakers (2-3-2) on Sunday.
Alex Raphael (East York, Ont.) and Nordo Gooden (Kingston, Jamaica) scored goals for the Varsity Blues.
John Smits (Mississauga, Ont.) made four saves in goal for the win.
QUEEN'S 3, TRENT 1
At Queen's, three different Gaels scored in a 3-1 home victory over the Trent Excalibur (2-5-1) on Sunday.
Michael Arnold (London, Ont.), Andrew Colosimo (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Jordan Brooks (Angus, Ont.) all scored in the first half for Queen's (4-1-2).
Thaddeus Bolton scored a late goal for Trent.
YORK 1, LAURIER 1
At Laurier, the No. 4 York Lions (2-2-2) battled the host Golden Hawks (1-2-3) to a 1-1 tie in a rematch of last year's OUA championship on Sunday.
There was no scoring until the second half, when Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) put York on the scoreboard in the 48th minute.
The lead was short lived, as Richard Martins (Cambridge, Ont.) responded for the Golden Hawks three minutes later.
WINDSOR 2, BROCK 0
At Windsor, the Lancers (3-1-2) poured it on with two goals in the second half for a 2-0 win over the Brock Badgers (1-4-1) on Sunday.
Darrin Dielenans (Windsor, Ont.) and Ryan Wise (St. Thomas, Ont.) both scored for Windsor. Dan Mendonca (London, Ont.) earned the shutout in goal for the Lancers.
MCMASTER 1, WESTERN 0
At Western, Pat Stewart (Sarnia, Ont.) scored in the 81st minute to lift the McMaster Marauders (2-4-0) to a 1-0 road win over the Mustangs (2-3-1) on Sunday.
Matthew Grant (Brampton, Ont.) earned the shutout win in goal.
