OUA W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: GAELS CONTINUE REIGN WITH UNDEFEATED WEEKEND
Becky Conroy (Pembroke, Ont.) scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Gaels to a 6-4 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Friday.
Queen's led 3-0 going into the second period thanks to goals from Elizabeth Kench (Gananoque, Ont.), Megan McNutt (Ottawa), and Kelsey Thomson (Martintown, Ont.). Goalie Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) saved all 13 shots she saw in the period. Dodd-Moher saw 36 shots over the full three periods.
Guelph started the second period with a power play goal from Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.), one of her three points in the game. The Gryphons scored three of their four goals on the power play after seven Gaels penalties. Heading into the final period the Gaels held a 4-2 advantage with Conroy and Kristin Smith (Toronto) adding the final goals in the third to keep the win intact.
In all, five different Gaels reached the back of the net, and Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) chipped in with two helpers.
The Gaels won their fourth straight regular season game 2-1 on Saturday against the Brock Badgers to remain perfect on the season.
Queen's scored once in each of the first two periods to build a big enough lead to resist a late Brock push. The Badgers pulled their goalie in the last moments of game in an effort to make up the difference. The risk paid off slightly, with the Badgers scoring with 19 seconds remaining, but could not find the equalizer before the time ran out. Sara Brady scored the late goal for Brock.
Queen's netminder Karissa Savage (Calgary) saved 29 shots and narrowly lost her shutout bid. The Gaels received multi-point performances from both Kench and Smith, each having a goal and an assist. The Gaels pestered Brock's goalie with 34 shots, including 14 in the second period.
