GOLDEN HAWKS ROLL OVER LANCERS IN GAME 1
"We came out on fire we and we had all four lines going strong," said Laurier team captain Andrea Ironside. "We were trying to redeem ourselves from the loss at the end of the season and we knew what we wanted to do and we did it."
Laurier's Paula Lagamba (Toronto) opened the scoring just three minutes into the first period and the Hawks kept coming as a minute-and-a-half later Laura Bartolini (Mississauga, Ont.) scored to make it 2-0 by the end of one. The Lancers managed just one shot on net in the first period, while the purple and gold fired 14 at Windsor netminder Jamie Tessier (Copper Cliff, Ont.).
The second period was all Laurier as just 46 seconds in Katherine Shirriff (Carrying Place, Ont.) scored her first of the post season and then Candice Styles (Orangeville, Ont.) banked one off the post and in at the four minute mark. Styles would strike again with the man-advantage late in the period while Shirriff would also get her second of the match to finish the Hawks scoring.
In the final frame Windsor rallied and attempted to get on the scoreboard, outshooting the Hawks 10-5 but OUA player of the year Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) made several screened saves to earn the shutout.
"Everyone is just picking up their socks and playing really well together," said Styles post-game. "We're just going to try and keep rolling in the next game."
All told Tessier turned aside 23 of 29 shots on net while Knox stopped all 15 for the shutout.
The purple and gold went one for five with the man-advantage, while the Lancers were stopped on all three of their opportunities.
Game 2 between these two teams will take place on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 4:10 p.m. at the South Windsor Arena.
