GOLDEN HAWKS TAKE GAME 1 OF WOMEN'S HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP
WATERLOO, Ont. - Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) picked up the her second shutout in just her third playoff game as the No. 2 nationally-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks took game one in the best-of-three series OUA final 2-0 against the Guelph Gryphons.
"Guelph came out hard in the first period," said Knox. "They were doing their best to shut us down and give them credit as they played well."
Caitlin Muirhead (Waterloo, Ont.) scored the game winner at 13:09 in the second period and four minutes later Paula Lagamba (Toronto) notched the insurance marker.
"It's a good feeling when everyone is so focused on winning," said Lagamba following the game. "You can go out and just stick to the game plan."
Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill with the Hawks going 6-of-6 while the Gryphons went 5-of-5.
"We lost our discipline a few times, which is something that we will address in time for the next game," said Laurier head coach Rick Osborne. "There were more penalties than I would like, but I know that there are two teams going at it and it was a hard fought win for this squad."
Guelph netminder Danielle Skoufranis (Thornhill, Ont.) stopped 19 of 21 and was named the player of the game for the Gryphons, while Knox turned aside all 29 shots and was the Hawks player of the game. Players of the game are presented by Harrow Sports Ltd.
"This year's team is more focused and faster than last year's squad," continued Knox on the OUA final rematch with the Gryphons. "We know every game is a battle and we really have to step it up next time."
These two teams will meet again on Saturday, March 6 at 2 p.m. in the Gryphon Centre in game two of the best-of-three series.
