OUA W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: NO. 2 GOLDEN HAWKS WIN 20TH STRAIGHT GAME
Laurier is now 20-0-0 in regular season play this year, while the Mustangs fall to 8-10-3.
The Mustangs opened the scoring just 1:17 into the first period with a goal from Waterloo, Ont. native Rachel Harada. The early marker prevented netminder Liz Knox's (Stouffville, Ont.) pursuit of Charline Labonte's career and season shutout record in this match.
The Hawks wouldn't answer until midway through the second when Katherine Shirriff (Carrying Place, Ont.) scored her ninth of the season on the power play. Devon Skeats (Whitby, Ont.) closed out the period with her fourth of the year to give the purple and gold the go ahead goal.
Neither squad would be able to score in the third period due to the solid goaltending.
Western's goalie, Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) faced 33 shots and saved 31. Laurier's Knox stopped 18 of 19 for the win.
The Mustangs were shut out on the power play going 0-7 while the Golden Hawks capitalized once in four opportunities.
Laurier will start off next week in a rematch with the Chinese Olympic team on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Toronto. They will then resume regular season place on Saturday, Jan. 30 when they take on the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines, Ont.
