PAIR OF GOLDEN HAWKS TO APPEAR ON CBC
The television show hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos and Carole MacNeil airs at 8 p.m. across the country on CBC and tests a 180 member in-studio audience with an IQ challenge.
A total of six teams featuring twins, politicians, atheists, believers, nerds and athletes will compete. At the same time, Canadians can take the test by printing a scorecard or participating online at cbc.ca/testthenation.
Bennett, a fifth year defenseman and Chemistry major from Belmont, Ont. is excited to have the opportunity to be part of the program.
"I'm looking forward to the opportunity to represent Laurier and having fun being a part of this," said the four-time OUA champion who is also one of the athletes recognized as an academic all-Canadian by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). "I think university and athletics have helped us to prepare for this program by keeping our brains active in learning and solving problems."
Powers, a third year winger and Kinesiology major from Kingston, Ont. was also recognized as an academic all-Canadian for her 2008-09 season.
"I think contact sports might affect IQ if someone has had several concussions," commented Powers on the potential lower score athletes might be perceived to have. "We're also used to having a limited amount of time to act and we also have been exposed to high-pressure situations in which we have had to handle ourselves accordingly so performing on a timed IQ test on television should be interesting."
This year's test was created by two of Canada's leading intelligence-testing experts, Dr. James Parker of Trent University and Dr. Don Saklofske of the University of Calgary. The 50 multiple choice questions are closely modeled after those found in standardized IQ tests and aim to evaluate performance in key areas of intelligence, including language comprehension, visual perception, memory, math and logical reasoning.
"We are taking the idea of a general IQ test and essentially putting it into a Roman Coliseum. I can't wait to find out who survives," says Stroumboulopoulos.
In a new twist, Toronto hypnotherapist Donald Currie will put selected team members under hypnosis. Tune in to find out if this technique actually increases participants' IQ scores.
