LIONS GO 3-0 AT CONCORDIA WOMEN'S HOCKEY TOURNEY
The Lions finished atop the standings along with the McGill Martlets, the top-ranked team in the CIS who also swept their three games to extend their CIS record win streak to 70 games. The Lions outscored their opponents by a combined score of 8-4, while McGill recorded 16 goals and allowed only four in its three contests.
The Manitoba Bisons, Toronto Varsity Blues and Guelph Gryphons all finished the tournament with 1-2 records while the host Stingers went 0-3.
Goaltender Sydney McMurter (Orillia, Ont.) recorded a shutout in a 2-0 victory over Concordia in the team's first game, turning away all 17 shots she faced. The Lions got all the offence they needed in a four-minute stretch in the second period when Amanda McBride (Newmarket, Ont.) and Chloe Milano (Maple, Ont.) found the back of the net. Team captain Courtney Unruh (Fort St. John, B.C.) was named York's player of the game.
In their second game, the Lions edged out the Bisons 2-1 in a close game that saw all three goals come in the last nine minutes of the final frame. Katie Ippolito (Richmond Hill, Ont.) opened the scoring at 11:52 of the third period and Andrea Joyce (Oakville, Ont.) notched what turned out to be the game-winner less than three minutes later. Manitoba made it a one-goal game at 18:43 but McMurter stood tall in the closing seconds to earn her second consecutive win at the tournament. Autumn Mills (London, Ont.) received York's player of the game honours.
The Lions produced a come-from-behind victory in their final contest, defeating the Varsity Blues 4-3. Toronto got on the board early with a pair of early first-period goals but the Lions responded in the second with three straight, including two on the power play, and added a fourth early in the third to earn the victory. Joyce had two goals in the contest, including the winner once again, to be named player of the game for York. Also scoring were Mills and Katrina Tollis (Ancaster, Ont.).
The Lions (9-4-1) get back to OUA action on Tuesday evening with a contest against the Guelph Gryphons (8-4-2) that is a make-up game for the one that was postponed on Nov. 7. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Canlan Ice Sports.
