UOIT TAKES AN OT WIN VERSUS CARLETON
The UOIT Ridgebacks men's hockey team defeated the Carleton Ravens, 5-4, in overtime to win the battle of the two first year Ontario University Athletics (OUA) hockey programs. The win improves UOIT's record to 3-11-3 for 9-points while Carleton's record now stands at 7-9-2 for 16-points. It was a historic win for UOIT as it was their first victory away from the Campus Ice Centre in their inaugural OUA season.
The Ridgebacks jumped out to an early two-goal lead in the first period on goals by Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, ON) and a short handed tally by Chris Lowe (Smith Falls, ON). The Ravens out shot UOIT 10-7 in the frame but goaltender Matt Mateja (Mississauga, ON) stopped all ten shots he faced.
The second period was a different story as Carleton came to life tying the game in a six minute span on a goal by Adam Marriner (Perth, ON) and a short handed tally by Jared Cipparone (Tecumseh, ON). The Ravens would then go ahead for the first time in the game at the 12-minute mark on a power play as Marriner registered his second goal of the night. The lead was short lived as Charlottetown, PEI native Dustin Turner tied the game just one minute after the Raven's go-ahead goal that sent both teams into the second intermission tied at three goals apiece.
In the third period, play was even as both teams had numerous chances to take the lead. The Ridgebacks managed to capitalize first as they went back on top with a Richard Power (Scarborough, ON) goal on the man advantage at the 7-minute mark of the game. The goal was just Power's second of the season. Carleton stormed right back tied the game for a third time on a goal by Justin Caruana (Orono, ON).
The game went into overtime and lasted less than one minute as the Ridgeback's Shane Nolan (Enfield, NS) beat Carleton's goaltender Jordan Wakefield (Spruce Grove, AB) with a slap shot to end the game at the :55 second mark of the extra frame. This is another milestone for Nolan as he also scored the Ridgebacks historical first goal on October 12, 2007 against Queen's University. Nolan is also leading the team in goals (7) and points (12) this season.
Mateja made 30 saves for his third victory on the year as well as assisting on the overtime game-winning goal. His counterpart, Wakefield, recorded 21 saves in a losing cause for Carleton.
Queen's 4, Laurier 1
Ryan Gibb of Scarborough, Ont. made 40 saves as the Gaels snapped a two game losing streak defeating the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 4-1 in men's Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) hockey action this past Saturday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
Queen's captain Jeff Ovens of King City, Ont. netted the game winner in the second period as the Gaels (9-8-0-2) regained first place in the OUA Mid-East division with the win. The Toronto Varsity Blues now sit a single point behind Queen's by dropping a 3-1 decision to Ottawa earlier Saturday night. Laurier (11-6-0-1) is in fourth place of the tough OUA Far-West division.
"It was a huge game and a big win for us," said Gibb. "Laurier is one of the best teams in the country year in and year out and we needed these two points tonight."
Laurier came out firing on all cylinders, outplaying the Gaels and occupying puck possession for most of the first period. Gibb turned away 14 shots in the first alone including multiple scoring chances. In comparison, Laurier's goalie Jeff MacDougald of Shallow Lake, Ont. faced only four shots and minimal chances.
"We were told they were going to come out hard in the first and we'd have to weather a big storm early," said Gibb who improves his record to (7-2-0-2) with only 28 goals against. "As long as we got out of the first no problem the rest of the game was ours; it's what the coaches predicted and it's what happened."
After surviving the first, Queen's came out with a fury of activity and an early goal just thirty-six seconds in. Calgary's Grant Horvath opened the scoring for the Gaels after he deked a Laurier defender and netted a wrist shot past MacDougald.
Late in the second Gaels Captain Jeff Ovens of King City, Ont. made the score 2-0 on the power play when Ben Heersink of Oakville, Ont. put a point shot on net which Ovens collected the rebound to the left of the net. Ovens in an attempt to centre ended up banking the puck off the back of MacDougald's leg for his seventh goal of the season. His goal was the eventual game winner.
Ovens who tonight passed former Gael Brad Walford for most career games played (120) in a Gaels uniform, agreed that it was a big win for his team but credits Gibb to setting the example.
"Everyone can just look at Ryan Gibb in the dressing room and see how hard he works for us." said Ovens. He deserves wins like this cause he really stands on his head sometimes. He deserves all the credit he gets."
In the third period, Brady Olsen of Enterprise, Ont. improved the score to 3-0 on a one-timer pass from Jon Asselstine of Barrie, Ont. Laurier responded just 30 seconds later when Craig Voakes of St. Thomas, Ont. notched his league leading 15th goal of the season on a pass from his brother Mark.
Lawrence completed the scoring with just five-seconds to play posting an empty net goal.
