CARLETON EARNS TRIP TO THE PLAYOFFS WHILE NO.7 WESTERN AND NO.4 LAKEHEAD SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES
The Carleton University Ravens defeated the University of Ottawa Gee Gees, 7-1, to end the 2007-08 OUA regular season the way it started beating their cross town rivals. Tonight's victory clinches the first year team's trip to the OUA Far East/Mid East post season tournament. The Ravens finish their first Varsity Season in 33 years with a 12-13-3 for 27 points good for 4th Place in the OUA East and 6th overall in the Eastern Conference. Carleton will play McGill University in their first post season series. The best two out of three quarterfinal series is scheduled to start on Wednesday, February 13th, in Montreal. The full three game schedule, with times and locations, will be released on Monday (February 11th).
The Ravens came out strong and despite giving Ottawa a first minute goal by Yanick Charron, Hull, Quebec, the Ravens were unstoppable in front of a sold out packed CU Ice House as they would go on to score the next seven goals over a 30 minute span of the first and second periods. The goal parade started at the 5 minute mark, when Adam Marriner, Perth, Ontario would score the first of his three goals on the day. The Ravens kept the pressure on Ottawa's defense and two minutes later Marriner put Carleton ahead for good. Carleton's Captain Andrew Gibbons, Oshawa, Ontario would score at 18th minute to the delight of the crowd to send Carleton into the intermission up by 2-goals.
The second period might be Carleton's best of the entire 28 game regular season, dominating Ottawa in every aspect of the game, scoring four more goals, killing two Ottawa Power Plays and nearly scoring two short handed goals en route to a 7-1 lead after two periods. Marriner would complete his hat trick, while Mike Testa (Ottawa, ON) Justin Curuana (Orono, ON) and Bobby McBride (Claremont, ON) would round out the goal scorers. Jared Cipparone (Tecumesh, ON) and Brodie Beard (South Porcupine, ON) would each record three assists in the victory over Ottawa.
The third period was mostly Carleton attacking Ottawa's back up goaltender Martin Bricault (Cap-Rouge, QC) as he made 16 saves on the 18 shots he faced after replacing starting goaltender Riley Whitlock (Calgary, AB). Carleton's Doug Jewer (St. John's, NFLD) made 19 saves to earn the post season clinching victory, in the Ravens' net.
Western 4, Lakehead 2
Western Mustangs rookie goaltender Keyvan Hunt put on a show Feb. 10, turning aside chance after chance from the Lakehead Thunderwolves en route to a 4-2 Western victory over their divisional rivals in the final game of the regular season for both teams.
The Coquitlam, B.C., native made 36 saves to keep Western (18-5-0-5) in a game they had little business in winning, propelling them to the victory.
Most impressive about Hunt`s performance was the number of saves he made that looked like sure goals for the Thunderwolves. During the second period with the Mustangs up 1-0, Hunt robbed sharpshooter Tobias Whelan twice on the same shift, snapping out his glove hand. He even stopped a shot in the third period by diving across the crease and batting the puck out of the air with his stick blade.
The game really broke open in the second period as Western, despite being outshot 17-8 in the frame, was able to put up three goals.
Patrick Ouellet (Baie-Comeau, QC) had the first as he made a beautiful move on Lakehead goaltender Chris Whitley after being sprung on a breakaway coming out of the penalty box 4:30 into the second for his fourth goal of the season. He pulled the shot from backhand, to forehand, and then froze Whitley and pulled it back to his backhand before roofing the puck to cap off his highlight-reel deke.
Kevin Richardson (White Rock, B.C.) then followed up by converting a pretty pass from Sal Peralta, beating newly inserted goaltender Kyle Moir on the first shot he had faced at 13:14. The goal was Richardson's 18th and put him into a tie with Sal Peralta for the team lead on the season.
Things didn`t get any better for Moir as Mustang defenceman Chris Petrow (Haliburton, Ont.) beat him at 15:48, with a Lakehead penalty just expiring, for Western`s second goal in three shots against the keeper.
But Lakehead stormed back in the third, finally solving Hunt just over a minute into the period, converting on a screened shot by defenseman Matt Jacques (Fort Sakatchewan, AB). The goal was Jacque's first of the season.
Midway through the period, Lakehead cut the lead to one on a power-play goal by Mark Soares (Vancouver, B.C.). Soares' 22nd goal of the season came seconds after Mustangs' star winger Sal Peralta got rocked by Jordan C. Smith. Luckily for Western, Peralta was alright and stayed in the game.
Lakehead continued to press until the very end of the game where, with eight seconds left, Jeff Martens iced the game with an empty netter. The goal came as a result of a great individual effort by Martens wherein he blocked a shot from the point at his own blue line, chased down the puck and out-muscled his man to slide the puck into the net with one hand on his stick from Lakehead's blue line.
The game was surprisingly physical throughout considering it was meaningless, as playoff outcomes had already been decided for both teams prior to its start. This was reflected by the fact that 24 penalties were handed out for a total of 70 minutes.
