RAVENS EARN 3RD PLACE IN VARSITY REDS FALL HOCKEY CLASSIC
Carleton came out strong and established they would compete from the opening whistle as they would score twice in the first period on goals by veterans Adam Marriner (Perth, Ont.) and Andrew Gibbons (Oshawa, Ont.). The Ravens would out shoot the Tigers 12-5 in the first frame and take a one goal lead into the intermission.
In the second period, Dalhousie turned it up a notch by out shooting Carleton 14- 5 but it would be the Raven offence that would score two more key goals by Marriner (his second of the game) and rookie Ryan Berard (Niagara Falls, Ont.). Carleton’s goaltender Alex Archibald (Ottawa, Ont.) made several excellent saves in the second period to preserve the one goal lead, at 4-3 going into the third period.
The final stanza belonged to Carleton as Brandon MacLean (Burlington, Ont.), Berard, his second of the game and Tony Manitta (Manotick, Ont.) all scored to put the game out of reach. Carleton’s Archibald would make 25 saves to earn his first CIS victory of his career. Dalhousie would outshoot Carleton 28 to 26 for the game.
Carleton travels to Thunder Bay, Ontario next weekend, to face Lakehead University, who will be hosting the 2009 CIS Men’s Hockey National Championship Tournament.
