LANCERS M-HOCKEY HEADED TO NEW ORLEANS
Head coach Kevin Hamlin announced the initiative on Tuesday as he preps for his first year with the Lancer men's hockey program.
The \"build\" that the team will participate in will be to assist those people in the area who were devastated by Hurricane Katrina, and most recently, Hurricane Gustav.
\"We're really looking forward to the opportunity to come together as a team and help out in New Orleans,\" commented Hamlin. \"This is a great chance for our guys to gain a broader perspective on life and to also help out in a time of need.\"
In order to generate the funds required to take the trip, Hamlin also announced that the program will be host \"An Evening with Father Ronald Cullen\", a dinner in honour of long-time Assumption coach Father Ronald Cullen.
The dinner will take place on Mon., Nov. 3 at the Fogolar Furlan Club in Windsor to honour the legacy of Father Ronald Cullen. The proceeds from this event will also be used to help fund the team's Habitat for Humanity trip to New Orleans.
Father Ronald Cullen, a legendary football, baseball and hockey coach at Assumption High School, has helped to produce some of the best athletes who have come out of the Windsor/Essex region. His distinctive style, promoting discipline at every turn, helped to produce professional football players Frank Jackunas and Larry Onesti, who played in the National Football League, with Miami and Houston respectively.
As well, he also helped to develop NHL players such as Marc Reaume, Mike Eaves, Murray Eaves, and Eddie Mio, and professional baseball players like Stubby Clapp and Joe Sidall.
An inductee into the Windsor/Essex Sports Hall of Fame, Father Cullen received the highest honour awarded to a Canadian baseball coach in 1996 by being inducted into Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
Tickets for \"An Evening with Father Ronald Cullen\" can be purchased for $50 each or a table of eight can be purchased for $350.
The public is encouraged to come out and show your support for an incredible member of the Windsor/Essex sporting community while also supporting a great cause as the Lancer men's hockey team looks to \"Build a Winner\".
