NIPISSING NAMES NEW M-HOCKEY COACH
McParland brings more than 20 years professional coaching experience to the team, which is set to begin play in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) loop for the 2009-2010 season. A graduate of Nipissing University as well as a former North Bay Trapper and a member of North Bay's Sports Hall of Fame, McParland's coaching credentials are impressive. He coached Team Canada to tournament victory in the Loto Cup in 2003, and has coached and managed a number of teams in the Swiss National Hockey League Division I and II during his career.
McParland also played hockey professionally in Europe, representing Canada at the Pravda Cup in 1983. He played Major Junior A with the Sudbury Wolves and was a standout player at the University of Guelph, twice winning the OUAA championships. He was named Guelph's athlete of the year in 1978-79. McParland's professional coaching record is 385-385-80.
"We are extremely excited to be making this announcement today that we are bringing a world-class coach to Nipissing University's men's hockey team," said Vito Castiglione, Manager of Sports and Recreation at Nipissing University. "Mike brings a tremendous knowledge of hockey, as well as, personal and professional contacts that will be essential in recruiting top players. He also brings his experience as a student athlete; he understands the commitment our student athletes must make."
"Mike is a great fit for the Nipissing team. He's a tremendous hockey mind and a great person who brings respect and credibility to our program," said Dennis Lathem, Vice-President of Hockey Operations Nipissing Varsity Hockey Team. "We are thrilled to welcome him and are eagerly looking forward to dropping the puck next year to showcase some excellent hockey here in North Bay."
"I am excited and honoured and to be here as the first coach of the Lakers and to be returning home to North Bay," said McParland. "This is a great opportunity to develop a top-notch program from the ground up. My experience in hockey has prepared me well for this opportunity and I'm looking forward to the challenge."
