WESTERN NARROWLY EDGE TORONTO, WHILE BROCK TAKES WIN FROM PATRIOTES
Defenceman Chris Petrow scored twice as the Western Mustangs edged the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 at Thompson Arena on Jan 12.
Special teams were a deciding factor as the Mustangs scored all of their goals with the man advantage and held the Blues to just one tally on six man-up opportunities.
Petrow, a native of Haliburton, Ont., scored a pair from the point on the powerplay for Western (13-3-0-3) while Marcus Smith (Markham, ON) added a single, also with the man advantage.
Alex Nagribianko (Toronto, ON) and Mark Heatley (Calgary, AB).) scored for the Varsity Blues (9-10-0-1).
In the first period, with Western on a five-on-three man advantage, as Petrow rifled a shot from the point to give the Mustangs the 1-0 lead.
When tested, Mustangs rookie goalie Keyvan Hunt (Coquitlam, B.C.) was solid in the Western net, making 18 saves for the win. His counterpart Russ Brownell (Oakville, ON) was also solid in the Blues' net making 32 saves in the losing cause.
In the second, after Western failed to score despite a number of good chances on the powerplay, Nagribianko converted on a high snap shot to tie the game at 1-1.
In the final frame, Heatley - brother of NHLer Dany - gave Toronto its first lead of the game at 2-1, snapping a shot glove side on Hunt.
But the Mustangs would re-establish the lead.
Smith slapped a low shot past Brownell, before Petrow converted on a low wrist shot for his second of the night and Western's third market on the powerplay.
The Mustangs held onto the lead for their 13th win of the season.
They tried to score an insurance goal, but Brownell was great midway through the third, stopping several Mustangs open looks to keep the game at a one-goal lead for the host Mustangs.
Brock 4, UQTR 1
The Brock University men's hockey team (13-5-1-1) ended the No.7 Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes (15-4-0-1) eight game winning streak with a 4-1 home victory at the Seymour-Hannah Centre this past Saturday night.
In the first period the pace of the game was extremely fast as both teams tried to get an edge early on. In an early attempt to gain momentum both teams attempted to utilize their physical play, the hits were hard and frequent.
Brock was the first team to get on the board as freshman Gary Friesen (Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON) would rip a wrist shot to the back of the net to give Brock a 1-0 lead. UQTR would fight back but a combination of stellar goaltending by Matt Harpwood (Welland, ON) and a dedicated defense core blocking shots led by Chris McLean (Sarnia, ON) who blocked three in the first period would allow Brock's lead to carry
into the second period.
After a tight first period, Brock was able to create a little breathing room when Mike MacIntyre (Sioux Lookout, ON) managed to handcuff Sylvain Michaud from the top of the slot to extend their lead to 2-0. UQTR responded as all good teams do, they dug down and started fighting harder. They were rewarded when Jean-Sébastien Breton
(Pincourt, QC) was able to jam a rebound by Harpwood to draw within one. The physical play would continue, resulting in a few powerplay opportunities. It would be Ryan Stephenson (Belmont, ON) who would find a deflected puck and bury it giving Brock a 3-1 lead. Again UQTR mounted an offensive, but Harpwood would continue to hold down the fort.
Early in the third Brock would once again find themselves on the powerplay, Ryan Del Monte (Mississauga, ON) would feed Paul Holder (Quispamsis, NB) who hammered a slapshot home from the point. Brock was able to lockdown defensively and win the game 4-1.
