York 5, Brock 3
The Brock University Men'ss hockey team (13-7-1-2) played the York University Lions (11-9-0-3) on Saturday night. Brock and York squaring off for the second game in their back to back series.
In the first period the scoring got underway very quickly as Tyler Harrison (Whitby, ON) would slide the puck five-hole on Matt Harpwood (Welland, ON) on a partial breakaway to give York a 1-0 lead. Harrison would strike again later in the first period with a shot low to the glove side. It would be J.J. Martin (Thorold, ON) who would spark the Badgers as he scored with a wrist shot through traffic to make it a 2-1 hockey game. York was not ready to allow Brock back into the game and Jerry Clarke (Barrie, ON) would score to give them a 3-1 lead.
The play in the second period became very rough. Both teams conducted some devastating hits and began racking up the penalty minutes. York would cause a turnover by hauling the Brock defenseman down and score on the ensuing two-on-one to extend their lead 4-1. Momentum began to shift in Brock?s favor after Ryan Stephenson (Belmont, ON) was hammered into the boards from behind. On the following power play, Jonathon Labelle (Prevost, QC) score to bring the Badgers within 2. Thirty seconds later Martin would score his second of the game as he found the puck in a scramble in front of the net sending the game into the third 4-3 and raising all 382 fans to their feet.
The third period had much more flow to it and both teams were pressing offensively. Harpwood would make a few dazzling saves to give Brock a chance to win. With 3 minutes to go in the game Brock would take a penalty. On the penalty kill the Badgers would cause a turnover allowing Ryan Allen (Fort Mcmurray, AB) to walk in alone, but was robbed by the sprawling York goaltender. York would take advantage of the aggressive powerplay scoring to win the game 5-3.
