PUCK SET TO DROP ON OUA HOCKEY SEASON
Both the women's and men's OUA regular seasons begin on Oct. 4, including the defending women's champion Laurier Golden Hawks as they begin their quest for a sixth-straight OUA title when they visit the cross-town rival Waterloo Warriors. Laurier finished 2007-2008 with a 23-2-2 record before defeating the Queen's Gaels and Toronto Varsity Blues in the playoffs. Laurier lost its chance at a national title when it lost to McGill in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship game.
Laurier is expected to ice a strong team once again, anchored by 2007-08 OUA Most Valuable Player Lauren Barch (Burlington, Ont.). The fourth-year player was second in scoring last season, with 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points. OUA All-Star defenceman Andrea Bevan (Collingwood, Ont.), goaltender Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) and forward Andrea Ironside (Collingwood, Ont.) form the nucleus of this exciting club.
For the men, the McGill Redmen were the class of OUA hockey in 2007-08, defeating the Brock Badgers 4-1 for the Queen's Cup. McGill has suffered some significant losses, as OUA All-Star defenceman David Urquhart (Thorold, Ont.) and goalie Mathieu Poitras (Gatineau, Que.) have graduated. The Redmen open their season on Oct. 10 against the Concordia Stingers.
