WOLVES, RAVENS SPLIT M-HOCKEY SERIES
Friday’s game had been postponed as lightning had caused a power failure in the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay after two periods of play so a shootout was played at the beginning of Saturday night’s match to decide Friday’s outcome and the Wolves won it on a goal by their sixth shooter, Dan Rogers (Milton, Ont.).
Both Lakehead netminder Chris Whitley (Oshawa, Ont.) and Carleton netminder Alex Archibald (Ottawa, Ont.) were very sharp in the shootout.
Saturday night’s regulation game was a match of fits and starts with the some solid play exhibited by both teams’ netminders; Carleton’s Archibald and Jordan Wakefield (Spruce Grove, Alta.) and Lakehead’s Kyle Moir (Calgary, Alta.).
Lakehead’s goals came from Dan Speer (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Scott Dobben (Drayton, Ont.). Carleton’s goals were notched by Francis Walker (St. Eustache, Que.), Adam Marriner (Perth, Ont.) and Brad Good (Kitchener, Ont.). The Ravens Walker, a former Lakehead player, had a great return to his old stomping grounds and led all scorers with a goal and an assist.; to add to his goal from Friday night’s game.
Lakehead’s Kalvin Sagert (Abbotsford, B.C.) and Jordan B. Smith (Cambridge, Ont.) had good games defensively while Bobby McBride (Whitby, Ont.) and Brandon MacLean (Burlington, Ont.) played solid games for the Ravens. The game also featured a thunderous hit by the Wolves Pierre-Marc Guilbault (St. Julie, Que.) that propelled a Carleton forward over the boards into the Lakehead players bench.
Shots on goal were 36-32 Lakehead on the night.
Lakehead again had problems with costly giveaways and undisciplined penalties which cost them the game. However, the Wolves can view the series as a test bed for possible line combinations. Lakehead will be using this series and next week’s three-game non-conference weekend to make their final cuts and decide their roster.
Lakehead hosts the Saint Mary’s Huskies of the AUS conference next weekend in Thunder Bay for a two-game non-conference series. The games will be video webcast live pay per view with ordering information available at http://events.news-cast.com/events/Lakehead.
