MCGILL WINS 2008 OUA QUEEN'S CUP MEN'S HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP
In the first period both teams came out with a defensive strategy as they tested their opponents strength. The play would flow back and forth with neither team able to gain an advantage. McGill managed to pin Brock in their own end forcing Matt Harpwood (Welland, ON) to make big saves, who was sharp and turned away anything thrown at the net.
In the second period roles reversed and Brock started to create some offensive pressure. McGill's goaltender Mathieu Poitras (Gatlineau, QC) proved to be Brock's match shutting them down. Brock would continue to press and eventually managed to open the scoring as George Bradley (Burlington, ON) snapped a shot from the point allowing Jonathon Labelle (Prevost, QC) to tap in the rebound giving Brock a 1-0 lead going into the second intermission.
The importance of this championship to McGill became apparent in the third period. McGill started to make some devastating hits causing turnovers and completely shutting down Brock's offence. Their efforts were rewarded when David Urquhart (Thorold, ON) would drive the net sliding a rebound past Harpwood to tie the game 1-1. Seeming to boost McGill's confidence they continued to pressure Brock. Shawn Shwechuck (Lloydminister, AB) would prove the difference maker as he out manoeuvred the Brock defensemen and rifled a shot upstairs to put McGill ahead 2-1. Shwechuck would quickly strike again picking the Brock player's pocket and walking in on Harpwood to extend the lead to 3-1. With the goalie pulled Brock attempted yo bring the game within one but the defensive core of McGill proved to be too much blocking all attempts. An empty netter would be scored to put the game away naming McGill the Queen's Cup 2008 Champions.
Shawn Shewchuck of McGill received the Jack Kennedy Award named to the most valuable player of the Queen's Cup.
