LAKEHEAD SWEEPS WATERLOO, WHILE QUEEN'S TAKES CARLETON TO OVERTIME
A goal by Lakehead captain Andrew Brown with 2:21 left in the third proved the game winner as Brown's No. 5 Thunderwolves men's hockey team notched a 4-2 come-from-behind win over the Waterloo Warriors Friday night in Waterloo. The game was a very fast paced and physical affair; highlighted by strong goaltending in both nets; with the Wolves coming back from a 2-0 deficit to score four unanswered goals to get the win.
The Wolves go to 17-3-1 OUA mark in conference play (21-7-1 overall) while Waterloo now has a 15-8 conference record. Lakehead jumps back into first in the OUA Far West; one point ahead of Western; four up on Laurier, and five ahead of Waterloo.
Lakehead's other goals came from Mark Soares, Kris Hogg, and Shandor Alphonso. Brown and Soares also notched an assist each. Waterloo's scoring came from Doug Spooner and Shane Hart.
Lakehead netminder Chris Whitley turned in another excellent game and raised his OUA record to a perfect 12-0. Waterloo freshman netminder Jimmy Bernier also played a strong game; kicking aside 34 Lakehead shots. Lakehead outshot Waterloo 38-31 on the night.
Waterloo went ahead 2-0 on goals by Hart and Spooner before Lakehead's Soares scored his sixth consecutive goal for the Wolves in the second period to bring the Wolves within one. Kriss Hogg then tied it at 7:31 of the third and then Brown scored his beauty to give Lakehead its first lead. Waterloo pulled netminder Bernier and Alphonso fired the puck the length of the ice to score with 55 seconds left in the third and seal the victory.
Queen's 5, Carleton 4 (SO)
Pat Doyle of Smiths Falls, Ont. and Jonathan Asselstine of Churchill, Ont. both scored in the shootout as the Queen's Golden Gaels defeated the Carleton Ravens 5-4, in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) men's hockey on Saturday in Napanee, Ont.
With the win, Queen's (12-11-0-3) regained sole possession of first place over the Toronto Varsity Blues who they lost to on Friday night and were tied with heading into Saturday's tussle against Carleton.
"That was a huge win for us," said Doyle. "We needed that victory badly and it helps boost the spirit in the dressing room. I know the guys didn't want to go into next week on a two game losing skid, so this type of win is something we can keep in our minds all week."
Both Doyle and Asselstine scored early for the Gaels while T.J. Sutter of Redvers, Sask. earned his first goal of the season to give the Gaels a 3-0 lead mid-way through the first period. Carleton regrouped and scored two goals before the end of the period to make the score 3-2 for Queen's heading into the second.
In the second, Carleton struck first on the power play at 1:42 when Adam Marriner (Perth, Ont.) beat Ryan Gibb (Scarborough, Ont.) to tie the score at 3-3. Queen's forward Jonathan Lawrence of Steinbach, Man. responded at 10:26 on the power play receiving a pass from Jeff Ovens of King City, Ont. which put the Gaels up 4-3.
With just twenty-two seconds remaining in the second period Marriner scored his second of the night and 17th of the season to tie the game at 4-4. In the third period neither team could find the net with both teams seeing a number of squandered opportunities.
Overtime saw the Gaels get outplayed as Carleton registered five shots on Gibb while Queen's could not muster a single shot on Raven's Goalie Jordan Wakefield of Spruce Grove, Alta. In all, Gibb stopped 35 while Wakefield stopped 34.
The shootout saw Gibb save both attempts against him, while Asselstine opened the scoring and Doyle responded by netting the Gaels second attempt.
Head Coach, Brett Gibson admitted that his starting goalie didn't have his best game of the year, but was proud that his team rallied to earn the victory.
"It's always a big win when you get two points and Ryan Gibb is having an off night," said Gibson. "He has been the catalyst for this team all year long and has kept us in a lot of games. It was great to see the guys really rally for him and they worked hard to earn that victory."
Gibson admitted that his team is in the thick of a playoff race and the Gaels will have to be perfect to conclude the season.
"We've still got a lot of work to do with just two games left. Our goal is to get that first round bye and to do that we need to go 2-0 the rest of the way."
