The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team is proud to announce that Dan Price has been hired as a full-time assistant coach, effective August 1, 2014.
"We are extremely excited to have Dan join our program," said Darren Lowe, who enters his 20th season as Blues head coach this fall. "He has a wealth of knowledge and will be a big part of our hockey program as we take the next step towards competing for a provincial and national title."
Price, a former varsity goaltender at the University of Regina (1995-98), has put together a solid coaching resume since graduating from the University of Saskatchewan's School of Law in 2001.
Most recently, he served as the assistant coach for the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League where he helped the team to the post season in both of his years with the squad.
Prior to that, Price took on the dual role of general manager and head coach of the Alberta Junior Hockey League's Drumheller Dragons from 2009-11.
"The vision that Beth, Darren and the student-athletes share for the men's hockey team, both now and in the future, is extremely impressive," said Price. "In speaking with them and their colleagues, it quickly became clear that there is tremendous leadership at every level here, and that the University of Toronto and the Varsity Blues program have created an environment full of sincere, dedicated and high-achieving people. I'm excited and honoured to have the opportunity to join this culture, experience its great tradition of excellence and support the players in the pursuit of their on- and off-ice goals."
He started out with the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats in 2003, spending three seasons as a scout for the Calgary and Southern Alberta region. Then, in 2006, Price switched conferences and became an assistant coach of the then Chilliwack Bruins.
After two seasons, Price was promoted to Associate Coach in 2008-09, the same season the Bruins were honored as the WHL's Scholastic Team of the Year. The 2008-09 season also saw Price serve as an assistant with Team Pacific, which took home silver medals at the 2009 World U17 Hockey Challenge.
The Varsity Blues men's hockey team opens their 2014-15 regular season campaign on Friday, October 10 as they host the Laurentian Voyageurs at Varsity Arena.
