Windsor's McDonnell named CIS Athlete of the Week
Davidson, a second-year finance student from Pointe-Claire, Que., was named MVP of the CIS championship hosted by St. Thomas University in Fredericton after she tallied a tournament-high nine points (6-3-9) in three games and led the fifth-seeded Martlets to their first national title since 2011. The 21-year-old forward opened the competition last Thursday with two goals in a 4-1 win over Laurier, scored twice more and added two assists in an 8-2 domination of Moncton on Saturday, before adding two more goals and assisting on the game-winner 37 seconds into the second overtime period in a 4-3 gold-medal win over defending champion and top-ranked Montreal, on Sunday night. Davidson, who potted a CIS-leading 28 markers in 20 games during the regular season, scored or assisted on 56.3% of her team’s 16 goals at the championship.
Basketball players Miah-Marie Langlois of Windsor and Kayli Sartori of Fraser Valley were also nominated for the women’s award.
McDonnell, a first-year liberal studies student from Allen Park, Mich., helped the Lancers capture their first OUA banner since 1998 – and the second in program history – with a 3-2 Queen’s Cup victory over visiting McGill, on Saturday night. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound forward scored midway through the second period to give Windsor a 2-0 lead and the locals held on from there. The Lancers are seeded third for the PotashCorp CIS University Cup championship presented by Co-op which gets under way on Thursday at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon.
