MEN'S HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Gryphons best Badgers in OT thriller
McGill 3 @ Concordia 1
VERDUN, Que. – Neal Prokop of Winnipeg scored the game-winner and added a helper as the No.6-ranked McGill men's hockey team rallied with three unanswered third-period goals and claimed the 27th annual Corey Cup game with a hard-earned 3-1 victory over Concordia at the Verdun Auditorium, Saturday.
The Redmen thoroughly dominated the game with a 54-25 margin in shots but ran into the hot goaltending of Antonio Mastropietro and found themselves entering the third period trailing 1-0, on a first-period goal by Olivier Hinse.
Freshman Alexandre Comtois finally broke the shutout bid on a power-play at 1:32 of the final stanza. He took a feed from Prokop, fired a shot and buried the rebound. Five minutes later, Prokop collected his second marker of the season. Sophomore Max Le Sieur put the game out of reach with an empty-netter at 19:21.
Andrew Flemming kicked aside 24 of 25 shots to collect his third win in four starts, lowering his stingy goals-against average to 1.79, to accompany a sparking .942 save percentage.
Mastropietro took the loss despite a 51-save performance.
"It was a good win for us because we faced adversity for the first two periods," said McGill head coach Kelly Nobes. "Their goalie played a really solid game and we had a hard time breaking that bubble. I thought we were playing well, carrying the play and doing a lot of things that we talked about in our game plan. The boys really persevered, getting pucks and traffic to the net front and eventually we scored to turn the game around."
One of the keys to victory was the play of Prokop, a rugged 6-foot-4, 201-pound left winger, who has been a big addition to a much more physical Redmen lineup this season. He showed up as a walk-on at training camp after not playing for a couple of years. The 23-year-old had a 44-60-104 record and 213 penalty minutes in 263 Western Hockey League games with Moose Jaw, Regina and Tri-City. Prokop was ranked 95th overall among North American skaters for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and received a free-agent tryout with the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets the following season.
But at age 20, he suffered a badly broken femur that ultimately hindered his pro hockey aspirations. He enrolled at the University of Manitoba, where he played in two preseason games for the Bisons in 2011-12 and eventually obtained a bachelor's degree in kinesiology (2013). He is currently pursuing a master's degree in biomechanics at McGill.
Since returning to competitive hockey, with the Redmen, it has taken him a few weeks to adjust to the pace. But in his last six games, he has tallied seven points, including a pair of goals.
McGill, which now sits atop the OUA East with a 5-1-1 record, will host Guelph (5-3-0) and Western (5-1-0) at McConnell Arena, Nov. 8-9. Both games are slated to start at 7 p.m.
The fifth-place Stingers, who have yet to play a true home game because of delays with the installation of a new refrigeration system at the Ed Meagher Arena, dropped to 2-2-2. They will host Laurier (0-4-1) and Waterloo (3-3-1), hopefully at their own barn, Nov. 8-9.

RMC 1 @ Ottawa 2
The Gee-Gees' Matthieu Tanguay-Theriault scored with 1:07 left in the game to make it two wins in row for the rebounding squad. The win brings Ottawa's home record to 3-1.
“We’re 3-1 at home, the home crowd makes it more motivating to play, and when we score the fans are really supportive, I’m happy we were able to get two points for the fans,” commented Gee-Gees coach Réal Paiement.
The game had Gee-Gees backup goaltender Harrison May starting between the pipes. He came into the game and got the job done on a way to a 16 save performance.
For a third game in a row, the Gee-Gees flexed their defensive muscle, by allowing just 17 shots including only three in the second as well as three shots in the third. “More shots equals more scoring chances, so keeping them to a low number of shots kept RMC from scoring chances. This performance also shows that as the season progresses, we are improving defensively,” affirmed defenceman David Foucher.
In the first period, Ottawa got off to yet another fast start, getting their first two shots of the game within the first ten seconds of the game. The Gee-Gees for most of the first period were dominating, buzzing everywhere around the net but just could not get a lucky break. At the mid-point of the first, Craig Moore had a monster hit which sparked the Gee-Gees but the period ended in a scoreless draw.
In the second period, the Gee-Gees opened with a little uncharacteristically sloppy defensive play which led to the RMC goal when defenceman Marcus Quinlin slapped it low blocker side past May, who was screened by several players.
Ottawa eventually woke up after a slow start when Alexandre Touchette scored a top corner goal following a beautiful tape to tape pass from Stephen Blunden, with a second assist going to Guillaume Donovan.
The Gee-Gees goal at 11:46 seemed to have sparked the team as they started to play a lot harder on the puck.
Early in the final period the Gee-Gees gained momentum from an important save by May off of an RMC breakaway. The Gee-Gees once again had golden opportunities to take the lead during the third period but just could not put it past RMC’S Paul Dorsey who was keeping RMC in the game.
The Gee-Gees killed several penalties where they outworked the RMC power play line creating chances on the penalty kill. The Gee-Gees finaly scored when with 1:07 left in the third, Tanguay-Theriault came in clutch with late game heroics scoring on a rebound off of a shot by Mathieu Leduc.
The Gee-Gees hope to keep on rolling at home, as they host Western on Friday, November 8 at 7 p.m., and Guelph on Saturday, November 9 at 7 p.m.

UOIT 3 @ Queen's 2
KINGSTON, Ont. (November 2, 2013) - Queen's (3-0-4) lost in a shootout 3-2 to UOIT (2-4-1) on Saturday night at the Memorial Center in OUA hockey action.
The Gaels were the first to score at the Memorial Centre on Saturday as Kelly Jackson (Toronto) scored in the second minute of play off an assist from Joey Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.).
Queen's extended their lead with a goal by Chris Van Laren (Kingston, Ont.) in the second period, his first as a Gael. Four penalties called against UOIT kept them short handed for much of the first two periods which helped the Gaels hold on to their 2-0 lead heading into the third.
UOIT's offensive aggression picked up with Nate Mitton scoring his team's first goal of the night, and Jason Shaw scoring on a power play late in the third.
At the end of regulation, the game was tied at 2-2 sending the game into a shootout. James Woodcroft of UOIT scored the winning goal in the third round of the shootout against the Gaels for the win.

Nipissing 1 @ Carleton 3
The Ravens men’s hockey team returned to their winning ways on Saturday night as they defeated the Nipissing Lakers 3-1 at the Carleton Ice House.
It was a rough and tumble affair with the Ravens earning inch of ice for the victory.
“I’m happy with the win, it was a good team effort,” said Ravens head coach Marty Johnston.
“We (Carleton) controlled the play and the guys were committed to going to the front of the net which paid off for us.”
Damian Cross (Nepean, ON) paced the Ravens with two goals, his third and fourth of the season.
Cross is a first year player with the Ravens this season after transferring to Carleton from Providence College of the NCAA.
The 5’11” 190 centre had to sit out a season of hockey to be eligible to play for Carleton this year.
“I have four goals this season but before that it had been two years since I scored, Cross said.
“I’m starting to feel better and better every time I step on the ice. Marty (Johnston) and the coaching staff have been pushing me to work hard all the time which is really paying off.”
D Patrick Harrison (Ottawa, ON) scored Carleton’s other goal.
Ravens goaltender Francis Dupuis (Ottawa, ON) stopped 22 of 23 Lakers’ shots for his first win of the season.
The Ravens outshot Nipissing 38-23. The Carleton power play clicked on 1 of 5 opportunities while Nipissing scored their only goal of the game with the man advantage and finished 1 for 6.
Carleton (5-2-0) has regained top spot in the OUA East with 10 points.
Nipissing (2-6-0) occupy 8th place in the division.
The Ravens will be off until next Friday, November 8 when the York Lions pay a visit to the Carleton Ice House. Game time is 7:00PM.

Waterloo 2 Toronto 8
Jeff Brown's natural hat trick powered the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team to an 8-2 victory over the visiting Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, November 2 at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve their record to 5-3-0 on the season, and remain just two points out of first place in the OUA West division.
Brown (Toronto) scored three goals in a game for the first time in his career as a member of the Blues. Michael Markovic (Toronto) also had a three point night, scoring his sixth and seventh goals of the season and adding an assist to cap off a four-goal, five point weekend for the fourth-year centre, who leads the Blues in both goals and points.
U of T also got goals from Andrew Doyle (Richmond Hill), and Winnipeg natives Lane Werbowski and rookie Connor Cleverly, who scored his first career OUA goal.
Despite the lopsided score, third-year netminder Brett Willows had to make 43 saves to pick up his third win of the season.
The Blues opened the scoring midway through the first, when Werbowski's centering pass on the rush bounced off a Warriors defenceman and in. The Warriors bounced back quickly, tying the game just two minutes later on a goal from Luke Lynes.
Toronto would take over the game from that point on, scoring five unanswered goals before Waterloo could respond with one of their own.
Doyle got the run started, putting the Blues back in front with a wrist shot from the slot, set up by Markovic who stripped the puck from a Warriors defender. Brown added to the lead late in the first when he finished off a centering feed from Dylan Heide (Winnipeg), who jumped in from the point.
After a scoreless first 10 minutes of the second period, Brown got his second of the night on a beautiful pass from rookie forward Dean Klomp (St. Marys, Ont.). The two broke in on a 2-on-1 rush, and Klomp faked the shot before sliding it over to Brown, who made no mistake to put the Blues up 4-1.
Then, shortly after the centre ice faceoff following Brown's second goal, the third-year forward streaked up the ice and hollered for a pass from team-captain Blake Boddy (Scarborough). Boddy whipped the puck cross-ice, and Brown hammered it into the top half of the net to complete the natural hat trick.
Markovic added two goals, one on a breakaway and one on a penalty shot, before Cleverly potted his first career goal to finish off the 8-2 victory.
Kain Allicock also scored for the Warriors, who are now 3-3-1 on the season.
The Blues next game is Friday November 8, when they travel to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Western 6 @ Ryerson 4
TORONTO - The Ryerson Ram’s men’s hockey team’s hot start to the season was cooled slightly on Saturday night, as they took a 6-4 home loss to the No. 7 Western Mustangs. The Rams debuted new jerseys in an unsuccessful effort as their record now drops to a still impressive 5-2-0 on the year.
Western started strong in the first period, continually applying offensive pressure off the opening faceoff culminating in the game’s first goal from Matt Paltridge of the Mustangs just 3:43 into the frame. However, after struggling to break out of their own zone for a period of time the offense came alive. Michael Fine (Toronto, ON), who entered the game just five points back of the league lead in scoring, put in two quick goals; including a power-play marker, which gave the Rams a 2-1 lead that would hold up for the rest of the period.
After Troy Passingham (Mississauga, ON) surprisingly replaced Matt Courchaine (Kanata, ON) to start the second period, the Rams continued to apply pressure on his opposing netminder Josh Unice. 8:11 into the period the Rams found the back of the net again as Domenic Alberga (Maple, ON), who assisted both first period goals, scored his seventh goal of the season. Peter Hermenegildo (Thornhill, ON) continued the torrid start to his OUA career, picking up his second assist of the night on the goal.
However Western was quick to answer, as just 37 seconds later Steven Reese slipped one past Passingham to cut the Rams lead back down to a single goal.
Shortly after the Reese goal Adam Courchaine would return between the pipes as an aggressive Mustangs forecheck resulted in a few players toppling over Passingham, who would be helped off the ice after giving up a single goal on two shots in the period. Matt Clarke was assessed a major charging penalty on the play and on the ensuing 4-on-4 the Mustangs tied the game on a Stefan Salituro tally.
Ryerson would answer before the end of the period however, as Dustin Alcock (Hamilton, ON) banged in a loose puck in the crease for his third goal of the season.
Greg Dodds found himself in net to start the third for the Mustangs and was quickly tested, as both teams exchanged opportunities to start a physical third period, including Dustin Alcock just missing his second goal of the night. But the Mustangs would tie things up at four apiece as Adam McKee slipped just his second goal of the season past Adam Courchaine. Courchaine would respond though, making a couple of nifty saves during a tense 4-minute Rams penalty kill following the goal.
With less than four minutes remaining in the third, Western took their first lead since Paltridge’s game-opening goal. Zach Harnden and Steven Reese teamed up on a short-handed 2-on-1 to put the Mustangs ahead. The Rams were unable to solve Dodds with Courchaine pulled in the last minute of the game, and the Mustangs added an empty-netter to make it a 6-4 final.
With their first home loss of the season, the Rams fall out of first place in the west. The team will hit the road as they face UOIT in Oshawa Thursday and then travel to Queen’s for a night game on Saturday.
The next home game will be Friday, November 15 against RMC at 7:30PM. Ryerson students get free tickets for all Rams home games.

Brock 1 @ Windsor 4
WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's hockey team continue to ride high early in the 2013-14 schedule, as they marched to a 4-1 victory over the Brock Badgers on Friday night at South Windsor Arena.
Four different goal-scorers helped Windsor improve to 5-1-0 on the season, while the Badgers dip under the .500 mark with the loss, garnering a 3-4-1 record.
Evan Stibbard picked up his second goal of the season to open the scoring in the first period, but Thomas Stajan evened the contest with a short-handed marker early in the middle frame. Jadran Beljo scored the only goal in a chippy, penalty-filled third period.
Windsor was 0-for-8 with the man advantage, and the Badgers went 0-for-4. Parker Van Buskirk made 21 saves to earn his fifth win of the campaign.

McGill 9 @ RMC 1
KINGSTON, Ont. – Defenceman Ryan McKiernan and forward David Rose each scored twice and added an assist as the No. 6-ranked McGill men's hockey team trounced the Royal Military College Paladins 9-1 at Constantine Arena, Friday.
McGill, which improved to 56-8-4 lifetime against the Paladins, set a single-game school record with 75 shots, including a 27-4 margin in the first period. The team's previous high was 61 shots set 32 years ago, when they twice registered that plateau against UQAC (Oct. 24 and Nov. 15, 1981).
The Redmen led 3-0 after the opening period, 6-0 after two and had tallied nine consecutive goals before Chris Smerek ruined Jacob Chouinard's shutout bid at 11:33 of the final stanza. Chouinard, who improved to 2-1, made 18 saves for the win.
Evan Deviller, his counterpart at the opposite end of the ice, was saddled with the loss despite a 66-save performance.
Seven different McGill players found the back of the net, including rookie Jan Kaminsky, who also collected three helpers.
Other McGill marksmen included freshmen Carl Gelinas and Alexandre Comtois, sophomore Patrick Delisle-Houde on the power-play, and team captain Benoit Levesque, who tallied an unassisted shorthanded effort.
Despite the lopsided score, the game was a relatively tame one with only five penalties called.
The Redmen went 1-for-1 with the man-advantage and snuffed out all three RMC power plays. After six regular-season games, McGill has killed off 29 of 32 opposition power-plays for a 90.6 per cent success rate.
The winless Paladins (0-7-0) will look to end their losing streak in Ottawa on Saturday evening against the struggling Gee-Gees (2-5-0).
McGill, which leads the OUA East with a 4-1-1 record, will play Concordia (2-1-2) in the 27th annual Ronald Corey Cup game, at the Verdun Auditorium on Saturday night at 8 p.m. The contest was moved last week because the Ed Meagher Arena, Concordia's home rink, is undergoing renovations to its ice-making plant.

Queen's 1 @ Ottawa 2
The Gee-Gee come up huge to beat the first place Queen’s Gaels 2-1 in shootout on Friday night in Ottawa. The win halts the Gee-Gees’ two-game losing streak and improves the team’s record to 2-5-0. In the shootout, all the Gee-Gees needed was the highlight reel goal by Alexandre Touchette who faked the goalie to go down and scored in the empty net. Ottawa’s Warren Shymko took care of the rest, stopping all three Queen’s shooters.
“Winning a game like that against a strong opponent really adds to our team’s confidence. We learned from our mistakes and played a strong game,” said Ottawa’s head coach Réal Paiement.
The game displayed one of the best sixty minutes put together by the Gee-Gees this season. “We worked on defensive zone coverage this week and it showed, because our breakouts were crisp, fast and sharp which kept their defence on their toes,” added Paiement.
Ottawa maintained an early up-beat tempo of hockey playing with more energy and aggressiveness than they’ve demonstrated this season. The Gee-Gees and Gaels traded power play opportunities with neither being able to capitalize. The Gee-Gees finished the scoreless first period dominating the game by maintaining a majority of the puck possession as well as holding Queen’s to their zone. The Gee-Gees finished the period with 13 shots for and allowed only nine.
In the second period, the Gee-Gees started from where they left off not missing a beat. Ottawa continued to show a strong fore-checking game, keeping the Queen’s defence on their toes. Early on in the second the Gee-Gees had a couple of very good scoring chances but just could not capitalize on their chances.
The Gee-Gees finally broke the stalemate when Stephen Blunden scored when he took the puck from behind the net and beat the Queen’s keeper short side, following a beautiful cycling behind the net by Touchette and Mathieu Leduc.
In the third, Queen’s came out and elevated their play, eventually tying the game at the 6:35 mark when Warren Shymko was beaten five-hole through heavy traffic in front of the net.
Regulation solved nothing, so both teams took the game to overtime where Shymko made a statement early making a huge poke check save on a Queen’s breakaway.
Ottawa next hosts the RMC Paladins on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Laurier 3 @ Waterloo 4
As a member of the UNB Varsity Reds for the past five seasons, Luke Lynes (Washington) is no stranger to cross-town rivalries – the Reds and the St. Thomas Tommies face off frequently for bragging rights in Fredericton, New Brunswick. So when he took the ice for the Waterloo Warriors against the Laurier Golden Hawks for the first time, he knew exactly what was on the line – and let his stick do the talking.
Lynes scored his first two goals as a Warrior, including the game winner in overtime as the Warriors claimed a 4-3 victory over the Golden Hawks at the Columbia Icefield Arena Friday night.
Andy Smith (Rosetown) Added a goal and an assist, and Chris Chappell (Pickering) pitched in with a late tying goal in the third period for the victorious Warriors (3-2-1). Nine different Hawks found the score sheet for the visitors, who fall to 0-4-1 and remain the only winless team in the OUA West division.
Mike Morrison (Hamilton) was solid when called upon in the Warriors net, turning aside 24 shots in the win. Laurier keeper Duncan Long was assailed at times, but he helped the Hawks earn their first point of the young season with 36 saves. Long's biggest stop came with under a minute left in regulation, when he denied Justin Larson (Buckhorn) on a penalty shot.
In the first period, the Warriors dominated in time of possession and on the shot clock, holding a 16-3 advantage after 20 minutes. But after Brendan Woods opened up the scoring at the two-minute mark, Waterloo needed a power play marker from Lynes to escape the first twenty minutes tied at 1-1.
Smith put the Warriors ahead with a shorthanded marker early in the second, but the Hawks responded with only 18 seconds left in the period when Ryan Lopes beat Morrison and evened the score at 2-2 through two periods.
It looked like the Golden Hawks might be poised to claim their first win of 2013-14 when Brent Vandenburg scored on the power play to put Laurier ahead 3-2 with just over five minutes to play. But moments later, Chappell beat Long to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Lynes put a bookend on his two-goal night when he notched the winner just past the one-minute mark. Jeff Einhorn (Red Deer) and Ryan Hanes (Kanata) were awarded assists on the game-winning tally.
The Warriors will now head down the 401 to resume their road swing, in which they will play six of seven games on the road. Tomorrow night, they'll take on new division rival – the Toronto Varsity Blues. Puck drop is slated for 7:30pm at the Varsity area.

Laurentian 2 @ Nipissing 6
If you take away the first seven minutes of Friday’s game, the Nipissing Lakers may have played their most complete game of the young OUA season.
The Lakers got down 2-0 just over six minutes into the game, but stormed back with six straight goals, including three more from Grant Toulmin, as they cruised to a 6-2 win over the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs.
The win marks the second in a row for the Lakers, and it’s the second straight game where Toulmin has recorded a hat-trick, pushing his goal total to nine already in just the seventh game of the season.
Laurentien’s Jordan Carroll scored both goals for the Voyageurs.
After trailing 2-0, Toulmin scored two straight to tie the game. Matt Paton scored the first of his two goals – which turned out to be the game-winner – early in the third.
Toulmin would add his third near the midway point and Paton would find the back of the net again late in the game, just before Brandon Warmington added insult to injury with a goal in the final minute of the game.
Kirk Rafuse earned the win, making 19 saves. The Lakers outshot the Voyageurs 30-21, including 23-13 in the final two periods.
The Lakers are on the road Saturday taking on the Carleton Ravens, looking for some revenge after a lopsided loss in their home opener.

Toronto 3 @ Guelph 5
Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphon men's hockey team beat the Toronto Varsity Blues on Halloween night with a final score of 5-3 at the Gryphon Centre. The Gryphons advance to 5-3-0 on the season while the Varsity Blues drop to 4-3-0.
Brett Appio (Bolton, Ont.) led the Gryphons with a pair of goals in the win while Andrew Merrett (Vernon, BC) and Robert De Fulviis (Toronto) chipped in with a goal apiece.
The game started out physical, with a big hit from Toronto player Jeff Brown (Toronto, Ont.) which resulted in a penalty for a hit to the head and a 10-minute misconduct only 14 seconds into the game. The Gryphons were not able to set up anything in their power play however and the Varsity Blues successfully killed it off. The Gryphons were able to use their speed to capitalize on the Toronto mistakes, with a backhanded pass from Robert De Fulviis to Carlos Amestoy (Toronto) early in the period after a breakaway was the first close call for the Gryphons, but Amestoy was unable to beat the goalie and the game stayed scoreless. It would be the Varsity Blues who would get on the board first after a slashing penalty on De Fulviis put them on the power play. Michael Markovic (Toronto, Ont.) would slip it in the bottom right corner after a pass from Lane Werbowski (Winnipeg, Man.) and Garrett Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.) to make it 1-0 going into the second period.
The second period started much like the first with a penalty against the Varsity Blues for interference at the 21-second mark. The Gryphons were able to capitalize on the power play at 1:26 with a goal by Andrew Merrett from inside the crease to tie it up, with Teal Burns (Prince Rubert, BC) on the assist. The scoring would be back and forth with Toronto scoring only a minute later to make it 2-1 with Tyler Liukkonen (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) putting it into the bottom left hand corner, with Jeff Brown (Toronto, Ont.) and Blake Boddy (Scarborough, Ont.) on the assists. The Gryphons responded shortly after with Andrew Merrett powering through the neutral zone, passing to Brett Appio who scored down low to make it 2-2 for the Gryphons.
The Gryphons were able to capitalize on a Toronto turn over, with Kyle Neuber taking it up, eventually finding De Fulviis who put it through the five hole to make it 3-2 for the Gryphons at 13:30. The lead was short lived with Toronto scoring at 18:43 after Markovic was able to beat Gryphon goalie Chris McDougall (Copper Cliff), tipping one in the right side of the net after a pass from Tyler Von Engelbrechten (Markham, Ont.) to make it 3-3. A penalty called on Von Engelbrechten would put the Gryphons on a power play in the final minutes of the period. Guelph was able to use the man advantage to score, with Neuber taking a shot from inside the crease after a pass from Michael Hasson (Ariss, Ont.) and Teal Burns to make it 4-3 to end the second period.
There was back and forth action to start the third period with shots on goal even for both teams. It wasn't until the second half of the period that the intensity picked up and the Varsity Blues started to take control of the game. The Gryphons were able to bring their intensity up to match, with Broussard taking a shot that would end up going over the bar. Toronto would pull their goalie in the last minute of play to try and overtake the Gryphons, but Brett Appio would end up scoring on the empty net making the final score 5-3 for Guelph.
Chris McDougall turned aside 28 of 31 shots in the win while Garrett Sheehan made 24 saves in the loss.
Although the Gryphons outscored the Varsity Blues they were not able to outshoot them, with a final shot count of 29-31 in favour of Toronto.
The Gryphons hit the ice next against the McGill Martlets on Friday November 8th at 7 p.m. in Montreal.

Ryerson 4 @ York 3
The York University Lions men's hockey team couldn't overcome a three-goal, second-period slide Thursday (Oct. 31), dropping a 4-3 decision to the Ryerson Rams on home ice at Canlan Ice Sports.
The loss is only the second for the Lions this season, moving them to 5-2 on the year. They remain atop the OUA West standings with the Lakehead Thunderwolves and the Rams, who moved to 5-1 with the win.
Left winger Michael Lombardi and team captain Jesse Messier (Keswick, Ont.) continued their torrid scoring pace this season. Lombardi scored two goals, bringing his total to four and his point total to 11, while Messier contributed three points, including one goal, to move into a tie for second place in the OUA with 12 points.
The Lions came out firing on all cylinders, as Lombardi launched a Messier feed past Rams goaltender Adam Courchaine (Kanata, Ont.) just 29 seconds into the opening frame to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead.
Riding off of the momentum from the early surge, York would retain control over the early action, with netminder Andrew Perugini (King City, Ont.) looking stellar. But an unfortunate rebound following a strong stick save bounced onto the twig of Ryerson's Mitch Gallant (Ottawa). Gallant buried the puck into the open net, evening the game at one goal apiece.
The tie was short-lived, however, as less than one minute later Troy Barss (Barrie, Ont.) and Messier would restore the Lions' goal advantage when the two connected to give Messier his first goal, and second point of the game.
The Lions would hold the one goal advantage into the first intermission.
But it would be Ryerson that jumped out to a fast start to begin the second, keeping the puck in York's zone with the Lions unable to clear. Dustin Alcock (Hamilton, Ont.) took advantage, beating Perugini in-between his body and the play side post, tying the game at 2-2.
The Rams were not finished in the frame. As the game grew ever more physical, they would add two more goals in the period, with both Victor Terreri (Mississauga, Ont.) and Domenic Alberga (Maple, Ont.) converting. Terreri's score would come on the power play, while Alberga capitalized on a tired Lions squad just thirty seconds later.
The Lions aimed at regrouping in the third, and returned to their fast-break style of play. Courchaine and Perugini were both perfect to kick off the frame, shutting the door for the majority of the third. The Lions were persistent, however, as Messier once again connected with Lombardi to move the Lions within one with six minutes left to play. The Lions were unable to find the equalizer before time expired.
The Lions will look to rebound on Saturday (Nov. 2), when they travel to Windsor, Ont., to face off against the Windsor Lancers at 7:30pm. York will not return home to Canlan Ice Sports until Friday, Nov. 15 when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees at 7pm.

Carleton 1 @ UQTR 2
The Carleton Ravens did everything but win on Wednesday night in their OUA East match-up against the UQTR Patriotes.
The Ravens outshot, had more quality scoring opportunities and carried the play for the majority of the game but ended up suffering a 2-1 loss to UQTR.
“The UQTR goaltender, Marc-Antoine Gelinas played very well,” said Ravens head coach Marty Johnston.
“We (Carleton) needed to generate more second chance opportunities in front of their net. We had our chances but in the end our power play needs to capitalize when we get the chance.”
The only Raven to beat the UQTR goalie was Nick Duhn (Carp, ON) who tied the game 1-1 at 6:29 of the third period.
Ryan MacLean (Burlington, ON) and Jason Seed (Ottawa, ON) picked up assists on Duhn’s goal
UQTR had carried a 1-0 first period lead into the final 20 minutes of play until MacLean tied things up.
The Patriotes (4-3-0) notched their game winning tally roughly four minutes later at the 10:26 mark.
Carleton’s power play finished the night 0-6 while UQTR went 0-3. Ravens goaltender Ryan Dube (Sault Ste. Marie) stopped 32 of 34 Patriotes shots.
The Ravens outshot UQTR 41-34.

Carleton (4-2-0) has 8 points but have a game in hand over UQTR. Queen’s is also in the first place race with 8 points courtesy of their 3-0-2 record.
