CIS MEN'S HOCKEY TOP TEN: Windsor leaps four spots to No. 5 ahead of Queen's Cup matchup with No. 3 McGill
The Bears (25-2-1 / 4-0 playoffs) received all 17 first-place votes and 170 points from the media panel for the second consecutive week following their two-game sweep of the Calgary Dinos in the Canada West championship series.
There is a lot of movement in the 19th poll of the campaign as teams continue to fall out of University Cup contention.
Rounding out the new Top 10 are the No. 2 Acadia Axemen (21-4-3 / 5-2 / no change), No. 3 McGill Redmen (21-5-2 / 6-1 / up two positions), No. 4 Saint Mary’s (14-14 / 6-4 / up two), No. 5 Windsor Lancers (17-11 / 6-1 / up four), No. 6 Carleton Ravens (22-5-1 / 5-3 / down two), No. 7 Calgary (21-4-3 / 2-3 / down four), No. 8 UNB Varsity Reds (24-3-1 / 1-3 / down one), No. 9 Lakehead Thunderwolves (17-8-3 / 4-2 / down one) and No. 10 Saskatchewan Huskies (17-10-1 / 1-2 / no change).
Five teams have now qualified for the PotashCorp University Cup, presented by Co-op, set for March 20 to 23 at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon. They include Alberta (Canada West champ), Acadia (AUS champ), McGill (OUA East champ), Windsor (OUA West champ), and of course tournament host Saskatchewan.
The final berth will go to the winners of Saturday’s OUA bronze-medal game between Carleton and Lakehead, at the Ravens Ice House in Ottawa.
McGill and Windsor also have one more playoff contest to play before the national championship. They will face off Saturday in Windsor in the OUA Queen’s Cup final, with the conference title and the better seeding for the University Cup on the line.
