MEN'S HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Lakehead shocks Ryerson in series opener
Lakehead 7 @ Ryerson 0
TORONTO - Despite mustering 45 shots on net, the Ryerson Rams men’s hockey team was unable to solve Lakehead goalie Jeff Bosch and dropped game one of the OUA West division semifinal series to the Thunderwolves 7-0 on Wednesday evening at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
In the first ten minutes of the game the Rams had three unanswered power play opportunities but were unable to capitalize, at which point the Thunderwolves stated to gain momentum. They opened up the scoring at 12:47 on a back door one-timer from rookie Cody Alcock on the power-play to go up 1-0. Just minutes after, the Thunderwolves struck again when another shot off the stick of Alcock found its way past Rams netminder Troy Passingham (Mississauga, Ont.) to put the Thunder Bay squad up 2-0 heading into the first intermission.
To open up the second period the Rams fired a bombardment of shots but couldn’t solve Bosch. Just five minutes in, a Ryerson turnover created a breakaway for Mike Hammond who went top shelf to put Lakehead up 3-0, and saw Andrew Quesnele register his third assist of the game. The physical play by both squads continued, but in the final minutes it was Alcock who found the netting again for the hat trick, and shortly after another one-timer from the Thunderwolves put them up 5-0 after 40 minutes.
The third saw a goalie change for the Rams as Steve Gleeson (Toronto) stepped in between the pipes. The Rams continued to create offensive opportunities but could not find the back of the net, and six minutes into the period Alcock walked in from the point and buried his fourth of the night to make it 6-0 for the Thunderwolves. Another unanswered goal by the Thunderwolves would see them take game one of the series 7-0.
Lakehead won the special teams battle, killing all six Ryerson powerplays while scoring once with the man advantage and once shorthanded.
The Rams will need to regroup if they wish to keep their playoff hopes alive and take the next two games of the series. They head to Thunder Bay for game two on Friday February 28th at 7:30 p.m., and if needed, game three will see the puck drop Saturday, March 1st at 7:40 p.m.

Queen's 2 @ Carleton 6
The Carleton Ravens took the opening game of their OUA East division semi-final on Wednesday night with a 6-2 victory over the visiting Queen’s Gaels.
The Ravens played a complete game over the Gaels in a tight checking and hard hitting affair that put Carleton one win away from the OUA East final
“I’m happy with the result of tonight’s game against the Gaels but know it’s going to be different in Game 2 at Queen’s,” said Marty Johnston, Ravens head coach.
“I expect things to be a lot different in their rink and be up against a desperate team. We (Carleton) will have to re-focus and be ready to play.”
Michael McNamee (Perth, ON) got the Ravens on the scoreboard at 3:29 of the first period with his third goal of the playoffs snapping the puck over the shoulder of Gaels’ goaltender, Kevin Baille’s to give Carleton a 1-0 lead.
Carleton made it 2-0 when Mitch Porowski (Ottawa, ON) scored on the power play with just under three minutes to play in the opening frame.
The Ravens struck 55 seconds into the middle period when Joey West (Orleans, ON) jumped all over a juicy rebound in the Queen’s slot to give Carleton a 3-0 lead.
Penalty trouble led to Queen’s hitting the score sheet when Stephane Chabot capitalized with the man advantage at 4:08 of the period to give the Gaels some momentum and cut into Carleton’s lead to make it 3-1.
The Ravens had done a masterful job killing off a 5-on-3 but could not put the finishing touches after being down one man.
The Ravens regained their three goal lead at 18:35 when Damian Cross (Nepean, ON) scored Carleton’s second power play marker of the contest to give the home team a 4-1 advantage.
In the third period each team traded goals roughly two minutes apart with Linden Bahm (Kinburn, ON) scoring for Carleton and Queen’s Taylor Clements finding the back of the Ravens net on a breakaway.
Seconds after Queen’s scored to make it 5-2, Corey Durocher (Nepean, ON) put the game away for Carleton putting the final touches on the 6-2 win.
“I thought the guys played well and we (Carleton) responded well to Queen’s style of defensive play,” said Porowski.
“My line-mates, Joey (West) and Linden (Bahm) were flying out there and as a line we seemed to have some extra juice to take our game to the next level.”
Each member of the West-Porowski-Bahm line had a goal and combined for 7 points on the night.
The Ravens outshot Queen’s 27-21 with Carleton goalie, Francis Dupuis (Ottawa, ON) making several spectacular stops amongst his 19 saves.
Carleton’s power play clicked twice on three opportunities while Queen’s went 1-4.
Game 2 of the best of three series will be played on Friday, February 28 at the Kingston Memorial Centre. Game time is 8:00PM.
If a Game 3 is necessary, it will be played at the Carleton Ice House on Sunday, March 2. Puck drop is 7:00PM.
