M-Hockey Roundup: York stays undefeated, Ryerson routs Guelph at the MAC
October 24
Guelph 1 at Ryerson 6
TORONTO - The building was rocking and the Rams were scoring on Thursday night, defeating the Guelph Gryphons, 6-1.
In front of a large and loud crowd at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens on Student Night, Ryerson got out on the wrong foot, as Brett Appio (4) slapped one past Ryerson starting goaltender Adam Courchaine (Kanata, Ont.).
After a five minute boarding major was accessed to Kyle Neuber for a hit on Domenic Alberga (Maple, Ont.), Ryerson rallied behind their rookie forward. Peter Hermenegildo (Thornhill, Ont.) scored on the powerplay on a slap shot from the point and the two sides were tied going into the first intermission. Hermengildo's goal has him sit a top the OUA defenceman scoring with six points.
Ryerson kept the ball rolling in the second with two goals in under two minutes by Daniel Lombardi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Alberga. Alberga sits in third in OUA scoring with eight points (5G, 3A).
It was much the same in the third period as well with three Rams goals, highlighted by Matthew Andreacchi's (Mississauga, Ont.) point blank shot past Guelph starter Keith Hamilton. Andreacchi's first OUA goal was set up after Lucas Froese (Grunthal, Ont.) sped past the Gryphons defence, wrapped it around the net before leaving a present for Andreacchi in front.
Courchaine picked up an assist on Andreacchi's goal, and was also solid in net. After giving up the first period goal, Courchaine, making his first ever OUA start, ended the contest with 26 saves.
Hamilton suffered the loss in net for Guelph, giving up all six goals on 28 shots.
NOTES
- Head coach Graham Wise broke up the top line of captain Andrew Buck, Dustin Alcock and Jason McDonough. The Rams started the game with McDonough, Steve Taylor (2A), and Mitch Gallant (1G, 1A).
- Entering the game, Ryerson had a CIS worst, 58.8 per cent penalty kill percentage, while Guelph was tops in the OUA with a powerplay percentage of 33.3 per cent. Ryerson was able to kill off all 10 Guelph powerplay opportunities.
- With the win, Ryerson now sits in a tie with Lakehead and Windsor for second place in the OUA West division. All three teams have identical 3-1 records.
- Ryerson will go on the road Friday night as they face the Brock Badgers (3-2). Game time at the Seymour-Hannah Centre is at 7:15 p.m.

Waterloo 2 at York 3 (SO)
Third-year forward Jordan Forfar scored the lone goal in the shootout to lead the York University Lions men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in a battle between nationally-ranked teams on Thursday (Oct. 24) at Canlan Ice Sports.
The win extends the No. 8 Lions' perfect season run to five games as they improved to 5-0-0 on the year and remain first in the OUA West standings with 10 points. The No. 10 Warriors dropped to 2-1-1 with the loss.
The Warriors would open up strong, attacking York in their zone early. Lions' goaltender Andrew Perugini (King City, Ont.) would keep them afloat, making multiple beautiful saves early. But the pressure would force a costly penalty against the Lions, opening the door for Waterloo.
On the ensuing power play, Justin Larson (Buckhorn, Ont.) would beat Perugini for Waterloo's first goal of the game, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead with 11 minutes to go in the period.
The Lions would bounce back quickly, refusing to be held down for long. Setting up in Waterloo's zone, John de Gray (Markham, Ont.) ripped a hard shot from the point into traffic. The shot bounced off the Warriors' goalie and onto Michael Santini's (Woodbridge, Ont.) stick for an easy rebound. The goal tied it at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
The second period would be played under a deadlock, with neither team conceding a goal. Instead, the shift was to a more physical focus by both teams. The physical grind would lead to 10 minutes of penalties in the frame, but no one was able to convert on the awarded advantages. The 1-1 score remained after two.
In the third, the Lions found a little breathing room when Tyler McGee (Timmons, Ont.) buried another rebound for the Lions off of a Jordan Merante (Hockley Valley, Ont.) shot to regain a one-goal advantage.
Down by a score, the Warriors attempted a late surge in the third to find the equalizer. A scramble in front of the Lions net bounced the puck back to Waterloo's point, where defenceman Ryan Hanes (Kanata, Ont.) was waiting. Hanes launched the puck into the back of the net to erase York's lead. The 2-2 tally stood at the end of three.
With an overtime period settling nothing, the teams entered a shootout. After Perugini stopped the Warrior's first shooter, York turned Forfar (Sutton, Ont.) to kick it off for the Lions. Forfar stickhandled into Waterloo's zone and rifled a laser, bar-down snipe for the score.
Perugini would turn away Waterloo's next two shooters to secure the win.
The Lions will look to continue the stellar start to their perfect season when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday (Oct. 26) at 7pm at Canlan Ice Sports.
