MEN'S HOCKEY ROUNDUP: McGill advances to Queen's Cup with 2-1 win over Carleton
The win gives the Redmen the East division crown and guarantees them a spot in the OUA Queen’s Cup Championship game against the Windsor Lancers who captured the OUA West crown, as well as a trip to the CIS University Cup tournament.
Carleton still has another chance to advance to the University Cup Championships, as this year is the OUA’s turn to send a third team to the Nationals.
The Ravens will host a one-game showdown against the Lakehead Thunderwolves next Saturday, March 15 to see which team will get the final berth in the six-team tourney.
For the third time in as many games, the Redmen opened the scoring when Neal Prokop gave McGill a 1-0 lead at 9:20 of the opening period.
The game stood that way until Michael McNamee (Perth, ON) tied things up for the Ravens at 14:48 of the middle frame with a quick wrist shot that eluded McGill netminder, Jacob Gervais-Chouinard.
The Redmen took a 2-1 lead roughly three minutes later when Jean-Phillipe Mathieu scored a power play marker to give McGill a 2-1 lead.
With the seconds winding down in the period the Ravens appeared to tie things up with a shot that clearly went into the net but referee Sean Reid called it off saying that time had expired.
“The ref said that he was 100% sure the buzzer went before the puck crossed the line,” said Marty Johnston, Ravens head coach.
That was all the scoring in the game as the Redmen hung on for the win and series victory.
“We (Carleton) get a second chance at going to nationals next weekend against Lakehead,” said Johnston.
“We’ll be at home and have a whole week to get ready for the bronze medal game. I know the team will be ready.”
Ravens goalie Francis Dupuis (Ottawa, ON) stopped 17 of 19 McGill shots.
Carleton outshot McGill 22-19 and went 0-4 on the power play.
The OUA bronze medal game will be played at the Carleton Ice House next Saturday, March 15. Game time is 7:00PM.
