CIS athletes of the week: Guelphâ??s Huard honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Emilie Chiasson, a rugby player from Acadia University, and Nick Huard, a hockey player from the University of Guelph, are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 13, 2013.
Chiasson, a fourth-year science student from Ottawa, scored a whopping 38 points last Saturday in an 88-5 victory over UPEI to up her season total to 172 in seven games, a new AUS conference record. The 5-foot-7 standout, who plays both fly-half and fullback, racked up four tries and nine conversions in the win to shatter the previous league mark of 145 points set a year ago by StFX’S Magali Harvey. Chiasson will look to add to her record on Saturday when the nationally fifth-ranked Axewomen (7-0) close out the regular season against No. 6 StFX (6-1), with first-place in the AUS standings on the line.
Montreal swimmer Sandrine Mainville, UOIT soccer player Sonia Sampogna and Trinity Western soccer player Krista Gommeringer were also nominated for the women’s award.
Huard, a second-year arts major from North Bay, Ont., tallied five points in two contests, including four goals, to help the Gryphons kick off their OUA schedule with home wins over perennial powerhouse UQTR and Concordia. In Friday’s 5-3 decision against the nationally-ranked Patriotes, the talented centre recorded a hat trick, including the game-tying goal and the insurance marker. The following night, he opened the scoring five minutes into the first period and then assisted on the game-winner early in the third as Guelph edged the Stingers 3-2.
St. Francis Xavier hockey player Drew Owsley, Laval cross-country runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot and Alberta hockey player Levko Koper were the other male nominees.
